Monday evening marked the start of a new season at Malvern Prep, with newcomers finding their way and veterans assuming new roles and taking on greater responsibility. It all came together in the late going as the Friars scored four straight goals in the third period to post an 8-5 come-from behind win over St. John’s College at Ice Line.

House Young led the scoring barrage with three goals and an assist. Jake Weingartner contributed two goals and an assist to go with it while Lyndon MacClay, Luke Johnson, and Luke Detweiler scored one goal each.

But what was perhaps as impressive as the victory itself was how it was achieved. The Friars saw a 4-1 second period lead disappear as the Cadets (1-1-1) scored four straight goals of their own to take a 5-4 lead with 2:07 left in the middle session.

But the Friars were unbowed. Weingartner said it was a case of the newcomers stepping up.

“We have a lot of new guys this season,” he said. “I want to say we have about 10 freshmen and a couple sophomores that haven’t played varsity yet. I though they approached the game great. I’m proud of all the underclassmen, they really showed up today for the team.”

MacClay opened the scoring 6:20 into the first frame. Calvin Johnson answered for St. John’s College at 7:36 on a breakaway bur Young put the Friars up 2-1 just 21 seconds later.

Young and Weingartner added second-efforts. Weingartner’s goal came on a penalty shot to give the hosts a 4-1 lead with 8:27 left in the middle period.

At that point the Cadets, who made the trip north to Ice Line from Washington, D.C., found another gear. Meyers, William Chesnick, Lewis Hoffeditz, and Jackson Secrest scored goals in a span of 4:08 to send St. John’s College into the third period with a one-goal lead.

It was Young, one of the Friars’ captains, who kicked off his team’s third period surge when he tied the game 2:45 into the final session. Detweiler followed with what proved to be the game winner at the 4:03 mark and Johnson and Weingartner added insurance goals.

“I was super happy,” Young said. We had probably 10 freshmen and a couple sophomores; it was their first instruction to {varsity hockey}.”

Malvern Prep had a 46-32 advantage in shots, including 16-6 in the third period.

Quote of the week

““Sometimes I might take stuff for granted, but when you’re {a senior} “you’re thinking, like a lot of things like ‘This might be your last ‘and so you soak it all in. Just try to continue and put everything you have on the line because  it’s a last chance.”
