2018 Flyers Cup Seedings 2-25-18

 

The field for the 39th playing of the Flyers Cup was announced on Sunday. This year’s tournament will have a new look; the size of the field has been reduced.

Instead of the 50 boys teams that competed last year there will be 39; 16 each in the Class 1A and 2A divisions and seven more in Class 3A.

Hockey Happenings Update 2-24-18

Pennridge defeated Council Rock South 5-4 Friday night to earn the second seed in the Suburban High School Hockey League Class 2A Playoffs.

 

With that, here are the matchups for the four quarterfinal games set for Monday.

  1. C.B. South vs. 8.  Neshaminy. 6:15 at Rev. Ice Gardens

4. North Penn vs 5. CR North 7:30 at Hatfield

2. Pennridge vs. 7. C.B. East 9:10 at Hatfield

The upper bracket semifinal will be Wednesday at Revolution Ice Gardens at 7:00

The lower bracket semifinal will be Wednesday at Hatfield at 7:10

Championship game will be Thursday at Hatfield at 7:10

Hope some of you stayed up to watch the women’s gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada last night…. It was worth it.

The Suburban High School Hockey League concludes its regular season Friday night.

U.S. Women Fall to Canada

Canada defeated the United States 2-1 Wednesday night to conclude group play in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament.

Both teams were already assured of places in the semifinals.

The Americans will play either Finland or Sweden while Canada will take on either Olympic athletes from Russia or Switzerland. One semifinal will be played late Sunday night (11:10 p.m. Eastern time), the other at 7:10 Monday morning,.

The gold-medal game is set for 11:10 Eastern Time Wednesday night (1:10 Thursday afternoon in Korea).

OAKS—Germantown Academy’s approach on the ice might best be described as workmanlike rather than stylish. It’s an approach that has paid off all season, most notably on Tuesday afternoon.

The Patriots kept up the pressure all afternoon in the course of a 4-0 win over Springside-Chestnut Hill in an Independence Interscholastic Hockey League playoff semifinal at Oaks Center Ice. The win puts top-seeded GA (12-1) in Thursday’s championship game against Pennington (3:50 start) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 1923 Arena.

Tim Landmesser scored two goals and assisted on another as the Patriots won their 11th straight game, recorded their fourth straight shutout, and pressured their opponents for a full 45 minutes.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about,” said GA coach John Fields. “Just bring relentless on the puck. Just keep pressuring and pressuring.”

Fields’ team did just that in the opening period although it took the Patriots some time to find the back of the net. The fourth-seeded Blue Devils (3-5-3) got a stellar effort from sophomore goaltender Liam Peterson kept his team in the game by making 16 saves in the first frame. “Their goaltender was outstanding,” Fields said. “He’s amazing. Getting the puck past him is just so difficult.

It took GA 12 minutes, 44 seconds to score its first goal. Moseley Schwartz scored a power-play goal on a slapshot from the left point while the Blue Devils’ Matt Kestenbaum was in the box serving a tripping penalty.

Landmesser, who assisted on Schwartz’s goal, scored one of his own just 41 seconds later to give his team a 2-0 advantage. “I think we had good pressure on them,” he said. “We were pretty much all over them, we were moving the puck well.”

The Patriots extended their lead in the third period Parker Chisholm added a goal at the 4:59 mark before Landmesser scored into an empty net at the 6:09 mark during a Springside-Chestnut Hill power play. GA outshot the Blue Devils 37-26.

Landmesser, a junior, says that the experience the Patriots have playing together is a major component of their success. “I think it’s great,” he said. “The ability to build chemistry with another player, especially if you’ve been playing on the same line, really helps.”

* Fittingly enough, on a day when the U.S. Women’s Olympic team bested Olympic Athletes from Russia, there were five females on the ice, four Blue Devils and one Patriot.

Eight teams will qualify for the Class 2A SHSHL playoffs. Historically, playoff qualifiers have received Flyers Cup invitations. The top six teams, C.B. South, C.R. South, Pennridge, North Penn, Council Rock North, and C.B. West are all assured of playoff spots. Central Bucks East and Souderton will clinch spots by earning two points (one win or two ties) in their two remaining games.

 

In Class A, Wisssahickon has clinched the top spot in a four-team playoff with a 12-0-0 record (24 points). Lower Moreland (9-4-0, 18 points) is also assured of a spot with one divisional game remaining. Abington (8-3-0, 16) and Hatboro-Horsham (7-4-0, 14) are favored claim the last two spots. Upper Dublin (7-6-0, 14) is also in contention.

Independence League Playoffs

Germantown Academy will face Springside Chestnut Hill on Tuesday instead of Pennington in the IISL semifinals. game time will be 4:00 at Oaks. The winner will face Episcopal or Pennington in Thursday’s championship game at Penn.

Hockey Happenings for 2-11-18

Team USA Women Winners at Olympics

The United States got off to a successful start Sunday morning in the Olympic tournament. The Americans overcame an early 1-0 deficit to post a 3-1 win over Finland.

Monique Lamoureux-Morando and Kendall Coyne scored goals in the second period to give the Americans the lead. Dani Cameranesi scored into an empty net to a count for the final margin.

In another Sunday game, Canada beat Russia 5-0.

The U.S. will play Russia Tuesday morning U.S. time (7:10 face-off). Their last group gam against Canada will be very early Thursday morning (2:40 a.m.

The mens’ tournament begins Wednesday. The U.S. will play Solvenia at 7:10 Eastern Time Wednesday morning.

GA Ready for IIHL Playoffs

Germantown Academy closed its regular season on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Episcopal Academy. The Patriots (11-1) are the top seed in the Independence League playoffs which commence on Tuesday.

The lineup features balanced scoring. Mark Dobson leads the team with 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. Tyler Dolan (10 goals, six assists), Andrew Miao (five goals, 11 assists), and Moseley Schwartz (five goals, 11 assists, are next).

GA will host a semifinal game Tuesday afternoon at Oaks (4 p.m. start) against Springside Chestnut Hill

Tuesday’s winner advances to the championship game on Thursday afternoon at 3:50 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of 1923 Rink against either second-seeded Episcopal or third seed Springside-Pennington.

That game will conclude their season. IIHL teams do not participate in the Flyers Cup
