La Salle 6, Malvern Prep 3

WEST GOSHEN— Coming off an emotional loss, La Salle needed a good performance Monday night and got it. It wasn’t a. Perfect effort but the Explorers played well enough long enough to post as 6-3 win over Malvern Prep in an Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference game at Ice Line.

Five different players scored goals as the Explorers (10-14) improved to 2-3-2-1 in the APAC to move into third place in the APAC with one conference game remaining. It was La Salle’s first time on ice since losing to Holy Ghost Prep last Friday.

Keenan Schneider, who scored a goal and added an assist, noted Monday’s result had far-reaching ramifications. “It was very important,” the sophomore said. “We needed these three points to clear our seeding in the Flyers Cup and right we can keep moving forward.”

The Friars (6-8 overall, 2-5-2-0 in conference) had the better of play early on, thanks in part to an early power play chance but the Explorers successfully killed off the penalty before Jake Armstrong scored the evening’s first goal at the 4:59 mark with help from Nathan Benner and Ryan Ferry. Schneider made it 2-0 with 52 seconds left in the period.

The Explorers extended their their lead at the 4:16 mark of the second stanza when the Friars coughed up the puck in front of their own net and Max Maddallo put the puck past Malvern Prep netminder Anthony Perti. It became a 4-0 game when Dan Dolan found the back of the net at 11:02.

The Friars cut into the deficit by scoring twice in the final minute of the period. Jimmy Kirk scored off a La Salle turnover with 55 seconds remaining before Ryan Sambuco added a shorthanded goal with nine seconds left. By period’s end, the Friars had a a 23-14 edge in shots but were still two goals down.

“When you have that many shots it’s tough when you don’t get your bounces,” said Malvern Prep coach Bill Keenan. “I thought we played a solid couple periods there, the bounces just didn’t go our way.”

It was still a game at the start of the final period and the Friars picked up where they left off when La Salle’s Chase Hannon drew a hooking penalty nine seconds in to create a four-on-four situation. Sambuco scored his second goal of the evening off the ensuing faceoff to make it a one-goal game.

By this point, La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner had some concerns. “I think we got a little complacent,” he said, “and got away from what we were doing well that got us to 4-0. I think we played a good simple game the way we want to play the first period-and-a-half and then you get up 4-0 and you think it’s going to be easy. It’s not.”

Muehlbronner’s concerns were eased when David Kimmel concluded a game of tic tac toe with Schneider and Jake Hannon with 9:10 left in regulation to make it a two-goal game once more. Andrew Budzynski scored into an empty net with 41 seconds remaining.

Flyers Cup Schedule Finalized

The schedule for the 2020 Flyers Cup tournament has been set. The 41stedition of the tournament will commence on Monday, March 2 and continue through Friday, March 20.

Up to 53 teams will compete in the event in five separate divisions. The field will be announced on the evening of Sunday, February 23 with the tournament to begin eight days later.

 

The schedule is as follows

Monday. March 2: Class A first round games

Tuesday, March 3: Class AA first round games

Wednesday, March 4: Quarterfinal games in Class A and the South Jersey/Delaware divisions

Thursday, March 5: Quarterfinal games in Class AA and Class AAA divisions

Monday, March 9: Class A semifinals and Girls Division Play in

Wednesday, March 11: Class AA and Class AAA semifinals

Thursday, March 12: Class AA and Class AAA semifinals

Monday, March 16: Girls and SJ/Del semifinals

Tuesday, March 17: Class A final and possible Class AA final

Wednesday, March 18: Class AAA final and possible Class AA Final

Thursday, March 19: SJ/Del final

Friday, March 20: Girls final

The three Pennsylvania boys’ champions will advance to the Pennsylvania state championship games on Saturday, January 21 at Ice Line. The game schedule will be as follows:

11:00: Class A

2:00: Class AA

5:00: Class AAA

According to Flyers Cup Committee President Eric Tye, the game schedule will be arranged to accommodate doubleheaders at tournament venues and to keep teams close to their home areas as possible with higher seeded teams receiving priority. There is longer break between the semifinal and final rounds in years past to account for the possibility of inclement weather.

Holy Ghost Prep 5, Malvern Prep 1

Five different players scored goals as Holy Ghost Prep scored a 5-1  win over Malvern prep on Wednesday in an APAC game at Ice Line. With the win, the Firebirds improved to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-1-0 in the APAC. The Friars slipped to 6-5 and 2-4-2-0 in the APAC.

Luke Panepresso’s goal with 3:24 left in the opening period gave the Firebirds a 1-0 led. Evan Mudrick, Byron Hartley, and Braedon Baesher added goals in the second period before Holy Ghost Prep’s John Connelly and Malvern Prep’s Matt Harris traded goals in the third.

Sean Joyce made 24 saves in goal for the win.

Central Bucks South 6, Council Rock South 3

HATFIELD—The atmosphere inside the building was a reasonable facsimile of that at a late-round Flyers Cup game. And with good reason, for both central Bucks South and Council Rock South have presented their credentials as legitimate contenders for the Class AA Flyers Cup title.

On this night, it was the Titans who prevailed, 6-3. Matt Milanesi and Colin Abbonizio each scored twice as C.B. South (9-0-0-1 overall, 7-0 in league play) remained atop the SHSHL’s Class AA Division.

In the sometimes-rambunctious atmosphere at Revolution Ice Gardens the Titans’ experience proved to be an asset. They had 12 seniors in their lineup to the Golden Hawks’ four.

“I’ve been playing South hockey for four years,” Milanesi said. “I knew what to do. (Coach Sean McGinty) tells us to do the same stuff every game, ‘Come out, move the puck, get shots on net’ and that’s what I keep telling our underclassmen. That’s what we need to do each game.”

The Golden Hawks (5-4, 5-1) had the better of the play in the opening minutes but Mason Moyer in the C.B. South net kept them at bay before Dominic Patrone and David Kiecher scored goals om a span of 1:41 to give the Titans a 2-0 lead 7:54 into the period.

Jeremy Purcell cut the lead in half when he scored for the Golden Hawks at 9:54 but matters ground to a halt after the first period when play was delayed for several minutes while a number of spectators were removed.

The Titans, who started the second stanza with a full two-minute power play, immediately seized the momentum when Milanesi scored after just 55 seconds. Douglas Lopez answered for the Hawks at 1:43 but Milanesi scored his second goal of the game at 7:49 to make it a 4-2 game and the scored stayed that way to period’s end.

The Titans got off to another fast start in the third frame when Abbonizio scored at the 1:02 mark.

By this point, the game had gotten more physical and gradually became a parade to the penalty box; there were 13 penalties called in the final period after three were whistled in the first period and one at the end of the second. The game’s last 14 penalties were evenly divided.

The Golden Hawks suffered the biggest loss when, with 7:12 left in the game, Jimmy Sweeney, their goaltender, received a five-minute major penalty for high sticking plus a game misconduct for taking a poke at the Titans’ Nathan Fiveitz.

Michael Tobey scored a shorthanded goal for the Golden Hawks when put in a rebound of a Derek Steudler slapshot at 11:59 to make it a 5-3 game but Abbonizio finished the evening by scoring into an empty net with 1:10 remaining.

The start-and-stop nature of the third period left Joe Houk, the Golden Hawks’ veteran coach, perplexed.

“You’ve got two good teams,” he said. “Go out there and let them play …. You come down to the last 10 minutes of the game and you’ve got your two top players sitting in the box … “But they’re a good team. They beat us tonight, we weren’t on our A game.”

Still without a regulation loss to Flyers Cup-eligible opposition, St. Joseph’s Prep (APAC) remains as the #1 team in this week’s AAA power rankings. Malvern Prep (APAC) climbs to #2 with an impressive week of hockey – defeating both La Salle (5-4 OT) and St. Joseph’s Prep (5-4 OT). La Salle had the opportunity to avenge that loss with a 6-1 victory over Holy Ghost Prep (APAC), who fell to #4. Father Judge (ICSHL) rounds out the top 5, on the strength of two victories of this week – one over Catholic League and AAA rival Cardinal O’Hara by a score of 6-4.

Central Bucks South (SHSHL) and Haverford (ICSHL) added points in the win columns as they remain the top two seeds in this week’s rankings. North Penn’s (SHSHL) league victory over Top 10 Neshaminy (SHSHL) gave them the leverage to jump to #3 in this week’s rankings, jumping previous #3 Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL), who fell to Salesianum in a non-league game. Downingtown West’s two victories jumps the Whippets to #5 and CR South (SHSHL) climbs to #6 after an 11-1 victory over Central Bucks West (SHSHL), resulting in the Bucks dropping out of the top ten. Pennsbury (SHSHL), Neshaminy, and Central Bucks East (SHSHL) fill in #7 through #9 and Boyertown (ICSHL) makes their first appearance in the power rankings at #10.

West Chester East (ICSHL) remains as the #1 seed in this week’s Class A power rankings, although suffering a minor early-week 3-0 setback to AA power Downingtown East (ICSHL). Plymouth Whitemarsh remains as the #2 seed after taking care of business with an 8-3 victory over league rival Wissahickon (SHSHL). Springfield (ICSHL) remains at #3 after defeating Penncrest 5-0 and Unionville (ICSHL) jumps to #4 after West Chester Bayard Rustin suffered a 6-3 loss to OJ Roberts (ICSHL). Palmyra (CPIHL) enters the Top 5 after defeating rival Hershey (CPIHL) by a score of 5-4 in arguably the Game of the Week across all divisions. WC Rustin’s loss drops them to #6 and Hatboro Horsham (SHSHL) slides to #7 as a result of Palmyra’s win. Strath Haven (ICSHL), West Chester Henderson (ICSHL), and Hershey round out this week’s Top 10.

Eastern (SJHSHL) added two victories this past week and still sits atop the NJ/DE rankings. Salesianum (ICSHL) added a nice 9-6 victory over Top 5 AA ranked Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL) and remains at #2 in this week’s rankings. Adding two wins to their record this week, Appoquinimink (ICSHL) enters the rankings at #3. Appo’s jump was aided by the fact that Shawnee (SJHSHL) suffered a 6-2 loss to Eastern and a 3-3 tie to unranked Washington Township (SJHSHL).  Moorestown (SJHSHL) slides to #4 after being a victim to one of Eastern’s victories this week (7-2).  Cherokee (SJHSHL) enters this week’s polls after downing Kingsway (SJHSHL) by a final score of 4-1.

Bux-Mont (ICSHL) is your new #1 in the second edition of Flyers Cup rankings for the Girls division. The Bux-Mont ladies had a big 11-1 win over league rival Radnor (ICSHL) and also benefited from West Chester Henderson’s (ICSHL) overtime victory over previous #1 Unionville (ICSHL). Avon Grove (ICSHL) stays at #3 and WC Henderson enters this week’s polls on the strength of the win over Unionville.

Standings are calculated as follows

2 points for a win whether in regulation or OT

1 point for a tie or overtime loss

 

If a game is tied at the end of regulation there will be five minutes of three-on-three overtime. If the game is still tied it will be recorded as a tie game.
