For those of you who may not have been paying much attention to hockey the last few days, there have been some developments.
Ridley Out of Flyers Cup
Ridley will not be part of the Flyers Cup tournament this year or next. The Green Raiders were handed a two-year ban by the Flyers Cup Committee as a result of the much-discussed on-ice incident in their Class 3A quarterfinal game against Central Bucks West last March.
The game was called with 7:12 remaining in the third period. West was leading 7-1 at the time and was awarded a forfeit win. But several West players were injured in the incident and were unable to play in the Bucks’ semifinal loss to William Tennent four days later.
Five Ridley players, Brock Anderson, Jacob Cross, Nate Dunning, Ryan Gricco, and Thomas Plotts, all of whom were seniors at the time, are facing assault charges for their roles in the incident. No trial date has been set.
Of the 18 players who were in uniform for Ridley against Central Bucks West, 10 are on this year’s roster. Two of the 10 are freshman and theoretically will be eligible to play in the Flyers Cup in 2020.
LaSalle-HGP Rematch
LaSalle and Holy Ghost Prep will meet for the second time on Wednesday night. The Firebirds won their first encounter 2-1 on January 26.
Wednesday’s game (7:20 at Grundy Arena) will be special for reasons having little to do with hockey. The game will be streamed on wbcb1490.com and one of the most interested viewers will be half a world away. U.S. Navy Commander Chris Serafin is serving overseas but will be able to watch his son Andrew, a junior at Holy Ghost Prep, in action.
Patriots Set for Postseason
Germantown Academy closed out its regular season in the Independence Interscholastic Hockey League with a 4-0 win over Episcopal Academy on Tuesday.
The Patriots (11-1) will host a playoff semifinal next Tuesday, February 13 at 4:00 at Oaks against an opponent to be named. If they’ll play in the championship game on Thursday the 15th at Penn’s Class of ’23 rink (3:50 start). The Patriots reached the title game last year before falling to the Haverford School.
