Irregardless of the success of the team on the ice, the Philadelphia Flyers organization maintains strong ties to the community, and has since the franchise’s earliest days.
The Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association has been instrumental in that effort.
Late Sunday afternoon, prior to the Flyers’ game against the San Jose Sharks, the alumni association, in conjunction with the Flyers Cup Committee, presented a bicycle to 6-year old Evangeline Torres as part of its Every Child Deserves a Bike campaign. Evangeline, who is a first grader, was born with Cerebellar Atrophy, a disorder that affects the nerves in the back of her brain and impacts her coordination and her ability to stand, walk, speak, and maintain her balance. Her new bike was modified to account for her medical issues.
The alumni association first donated a bike in December of 2020 as part of its 12 Days of Christmas Giving program. That was the catalyst for the Every Child Deserves a Bike effort. Today, the organization awards a bike each month, save for a pause in the winter months.

“This program puts a smile on a kid’s face right away,” he said. “It puts a smile on Mom and Dad’s face right away because so many kids with disabilities don’t get to ride a bike like most other children. “I’m a very avid bike rider, so I get a real kick out of this program, just seeing kids on bikes and riding.”
Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference Commissioner Jim Britt represented the Flyers Cup Committee at Sunday’s event. He stressed the importance of the Flyers Cup tournament’s involvement in the Every Child Should Have a Bike effort.
“This was a natural for the Flyers Cup Committee to talk this through,” he said. “We started a discussion about ‘What can we do for community service, for giving back?’
“(Flyers Cup Committee President) Eric Tye and (Flyers Director of Community Relations and Hockey Development) Rob Baer got their heads together and came up with this
“This was one of the easiest things that we could connect the dots with, It’s a great cause. It’s a special cause with the young lady who’s getting the bike, and it’s just a natural outgrowth of how everybody in the hockey community feels (about) giving back.”
Four high-school hockey players attended Sunday’s event. All four played for Flyers Cup championship teams in 2022.
Mason Zuber is a defenseman for Eastern (N.J.). “It’s really good to see people helping people out that are fortunate,” he said. “It’s sad to see how they have to live their lives and it’s good to bring them up in any way that you can.”

“I’m honored that I get to be a part of this,” she said. “It’s great to give back to people. I have the opportunity to play hockey and I love to give that opportunity to other people and just five other people opportunities for whatever they want to do.”
Colin Dachowski, who helped Pennridge win the Class AA Flyers Cup last season, was happy to be part of the event. “It’s a pretty cool experience,” he said. “Representing our team and helping other people. Helping other people is great.”
Jimmy Jacobs skates for two-time defending Class AA Cup champion and defending APAC champion Malvern Prep. He understands the importance of connecting with the larger hockey community.
“I think it’s a big deal,” he said. “I do see there are bigger things than the APAC and when you come together as a community, I think it really shows who you are as a person and you’re doing something that I think is just a great thing in general.”
The Flyers organization partners with Help Hope Live to get bikes to children. For nearly four decades, Help Hope Live, which is based in Radnor, has worked to create networks of caring individuals to cover medical bills not covered by insurance. Kelly Green is the organization’s executive director.
“This is probably one of the most amazing partnerships we have,” she said. “What it gives a child who has some mobility challenges is a chance to be a kid again. To ride a bike and do things that we all did growing up, and to experience that independence and wind through the hair.
“Only, these kids, because of their mobility challenges, don’t necessarily have ways to expeience them. Parents can’t just go to the store and buy a bike for a couple hundred dollars. These bikes that we have made for them run about five to seven thousand dollars each and they grow with each kid. So these kids will have their bike for their entire lifetime.”

Those who can’t make it to Washington Crossing can also participate from home. Perfect for the whole family, the event will include fun, family-friendly activities for participants of all ages including historic reenactors and a fife and drum corps.
In addition to participating in the Walk, Run, Stroll Event, participants also have the option to become a Flyers Alumni Teammate and earn special prizes like Flyers Alumni swag, running shoes, Flyers tickets, and more.

Former Holy Ghost Prep hockey player goaltender Bogdan Sharapat
is leading an effort to bring his mother from the Ukraine to the United States.
Sharapat, a native of the Ukraine, graduated from Holy Ghost Prep in 2016.
He came to the U.S. and enrolled at Holy Gost Prep through a relationship with the school’s junior varsity hockey coach George Mundy. He graduated from HGP, recently graduated from Temple University and now lives with his wife in Philadelphia.
Over the last several weeks, Sharapat has been working to help his mother survive the war in Ukraine. In the last few days the situation has become impossible and, along with the Mundy family, Bogdan has arranged for his mom, Olga, to escape to Poland and come to the United States and live at the Mundys’ house in Yardley. She will be coming here with nothing.

HATFIELD TOWNSHIP— The goals came in waves, like seawater crashing against a rocky coastline. In the end, it was Radnor who survived, 10-8 over Plymouth Whitemarsh in a Class A Flyers Cup first-round game Monday night at Hatfield Ice.
Eight different players scored goals to help the ninth-seeded Raptors (10-8-1-1) advance to a quarterfinal game against top-seeded and defending champion West Chester East on Thursday. Andrew French and Colin Knight each contributed two goals and an assist. A total of 12 different Raptors found their way onto the scoresheet in some capacity.
The eighth-seeded Colonials (11-5) got big performances from their big guns. Matt Flynn delivered three goals plus an assist. Luke Weikel, playing in what turned out to be his final high-school game, scored a goal and produced four assists. Aidan Keogh closed his high-school career with a goal and three assists.
Six minutes into the opening period, Radnor enjoyed a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Robert Toomey and Ryan Carr.
Before the period ended, the Colonials had tied the game on power-play goals from Weikel and Flynn.
The sequence was indicative of what was to come in that all nine penalties called in the game were whistled against Radnor. Reed Gall was flagged for four infractions, including an automatic game misconduct after receiving his fourth minor penalty; he will be unavailable for his team’s quarterfinal game.
Flynn gave Plymouth Whitemarsh a 3-2 lead 8:23 into the second period but French tied the game 65 seconds later.
When French scored his second goal of the game to put his team in front for good with 3:31 remaining in the middle period, the floodgates opened. Dominick Laudicina scored a goal at the two-minute mark and Tommy Kennedy made it a 6-3 game with 33 seconds remaining.
The third period featured nine goals. Andrew Knight extended the Radnor lead to 7-3 when he scored a shorthanded goal 2:21 into the period but the Colonials didn’t fold.
Keogh, Isaac Mishkin, Flynn, Timothy Murphy, and Conlan Carpenter all scored goals to help Plymouth Whitemarsh forge an 8-8 tie with 2:25 left in regulation but Tucker Graham’s goal with 1:53 left off a burst down the right wing proved to be the game winner. Knight added an insurance goal.
Afterwards, it took Colonial coach Josh Aiello some time to sort through it all. “We scored five goals in the third period,” he said. “That’s a pretty big accomplishment in any game but in a. Flyers Cup game, the biggest high-school hockey tournament in the state that’s pretty impressive.
“I’m really proud of our guys for what they accomplished in the third period and their effort, and their dedication to the team, to themselves, and the school.”

A total of 44 teams have been named to compete in the 43rd edition of the Flyers Cup tournament. The scholastic hockey showcase will get underway on Monday, March 7 and continue through Tuesday, March 22
Virtually the entire tournament will be contested at either Ice Line in West Goshen Township near West Chester, or at Hatfield Ice in Hatfield Township.

BRISTOL—St. Joseph’s Prep arrived at Grundy Arena Monday afternoon eager to get on the ice. Because of Covid-cancellations, the Hawks hadn’t played a game December 21. Upon their arrival, they spent 51 minutes of pent up energy.
The result was a 5-1 Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference win over host Holy Ghost Prep. The win was the first for the Hawks (4-4-1 overall, 1-1-0-2 in the APAC) in four conference starts and an ideal start to the six-week stretch that serves as a prelude to the Founders Cup playoffs and the Flyers Cup tournament.
“I think this is really going to set the tone for the rest of our year,” said sophomore Joey Samango.
Samango scored two goals for the Hawks and assisted on two others, giving him seven goals and two assists in conference play.
Junior Jeffrey Hammond contributed a goal and two assists. “We knew what we had to do,” he said. “Last time we played Ghost (a 5-4 overtime loss on November 12) we were winning 4-1 and then we let up with penalties. We came in knowing what we had to do.
Freshman Jake Schultz scored the game’s first goal 9:26 into the first period. Samango made it a 2-0 game at the 12:59 mark.
Nick Storti made it a 3-0 game to finish off a play that Hammond started 63 seconds into the second session.
At that point, Holy Ghost Prep coach Gup Whiteside made a goaltender change, inserting Colin Mudrick for starter Jason Soule (Soule returned for the third period).
Sean Marshall answered for Holy Ghost Prep (9-6, 1-3-1-0 in conference) just 26 seconds later but Hammond extended the Hawks’ lead with 1:44 left in the period.
Samango added his second goal of the game 11:22 into the third period.
Hammond is pleased with how this year’s edition of the Hawks has evolved through the first half of the season.
“Everyone knows their role,” he said, “and when everyone knows their role, and when everyone plays their role, we win a game. In a 5-1 win, everyone played their role.
St. Joseph’s Prep coach David Giacomin says his team is a more focused group than the team that struggled much of last year.
“This senior class, that’s all they talked about,” he said, “saying ‘We’re a good enough team to compete with everybody, but we’ve got to be ready every game and not just show up.
“So, having a full lineup definitely helps but also having the attitude that you want to be there and you want to compete hard.”

Jeremy Jacobs scored his third goal of the game with 6.6 seconds remaining in regulation as the Friars bested the Hawks Friday night at the Skatium. The Friars scored four goals in the third period to record their third APAC win without defeat.
