FLYERS CUP POSTPONED

UPDATE 3-27-20

The Flyers Cup Committee has decided to continue the postponement of the 2020 Flyers Cup Tournament, The decision was based on the Governor Wolf’s ‘Stay at home” directive.”

No date has been determined for re-starting the tournament.

The Flyers. Cup tournament has been postponed for 14 days. Flyers Cup Committee President Eric Tye issued the following statement.

Based upon the recommendation of the State of PA, the Flyers Cup Committee has decided to postpone the continuation of the Flyers Cup tournament for 14 days. During that time, we will re-evaluate the situation and make a final decision on the status of the 2020 Flyers Cup tournament.

We hope that everyone will follow their local and state guidelines and stay healthy.

Flyers Cup Class AAA Semifinals on Tap

The Flyers Cup Class AAA semifinals will go on as scheduled Thursday night at Hatfield Ice. Top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep will face fifth-seeded Father Judge in the 6:30 opener. Second seed and defending champion La Salle will face St. Joseph’s Prep in the 8:45 nightcap.

The finals will be held Friday at Ice Line with a scheduled 7 p.m. start.

Holy Ghost Prep vs. Father Judge 6:30

Fifth-seeded Father Judge carries a 12-game winning streak into the semifinals. The Crusaders are 18-5 overall and are the champions of the Intercounty League’s PCL Division. Sean Melso leads the Crusaders in scoring with 14 goals and 29 assists for 43 points. Robert Werner has provided 27 goals and 15 assists for 42 points. The Crusaders have won two Cups, the Class AA crown in 1993 and the Class AAA title in 2000.

Top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep (14-4-2-1-0) has won eight of its last nine games. It’s only loss in that span came against La Salle in the Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference championship game. Byron Hartley leads the team in scoring with 23 goals and 15 assists for 38 points. Evan Mudrick has added 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points. The Firebirds won the Class AA championship in 2003 and Class AAA titles in 2007, ’15, and ’17.

La Salle vs. St. Joseph’s Prep 8:45

La Salle, the defending champion and second seed, is seeking to win its 12^thFlyers Cup title, an all-time record (11 have come in Class AAA, one in Class AA. The Explorers are 13-11-2-2 heading into the semifinals. They’ve won six straight games and seven of their last nine. Keennan Schneider leads the Explorers in scoring with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. David Kimmel has provoded 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points.

St. Joseph’s Prep (11-9-1-4 in all competitions) captured its first Flyers Cup title two years ago. This year’s team relies on balance. Jimmy Craig is pacing the team in scoring with seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points.

The Flyers Cup Committee has revised and consolidated the remainder of the tournament schedule. The revisions were made because of ongoing concerns re; the coronavirus. The game times and sites listed below are as of 11:30 AM on March 12.

Three of the four teams in the semifinals, Perkiomen Valley, Downingtown West, and Boyertown, have never won a Flyers Cup title.

Haverford has a long and storied history in the tournaments however. The Fords won a Class A title in 1992, the second year of the current three-class format and claimed Class three consecutive Class AA titles from 2005-7.

Hershey, Palmyra, Win Flyers Cup Class A Semifinals

Evan Saxman’s goal 5:57 into the third period proved to be the game winner as Palmyra bested Bayard Rustin 5-3 Monday night in a Class A Flyers Cup semifinal at Ice Line. The second-seeded Cougars will face Hershey for the title Monday night, assuring that a Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League team will win a Flyers Cup title for the first time in the event’s 41-year history.

Third-seeded Bayard Rustin, which was trying to win its seventh straight Flyers Cup title, took a 1-0 lead when Evan Yori scored 2:44 into the opening period but Owen Schmidt and Gabriel Page responded to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead by period’s end.

Yori tied the game 10:25 into the second period before Robert Crook gave the Knights a 3-2 lead with 3:26 left in the period.

Gabriel Page tied the game for the Cougars with 2:26 left to send the teams to the third period tied 3-3.

Saxman’s goal put Palmyra in front for good before Kyle Ziemba scored an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Jackson Bell got the win in goal, making 37 saves. Rustin had a 40-30 edge in shots.

Jake Kloss, Hank Reed, and Jason Rippon scored two goals each as Hershey defeated West Chester East 6-3 Monday night in a Class A Flyers Cup semifinal at Ice Line. Toby Kauffman added two assists for the fifth-seeded Trojans advanced to next Tuesday’s final against either West Chester Bayard Rustin or Palmyra.

Chase Becnel, Luca Touring, and John Conlon scored goals for the top-seeded Vikings.

Kloss and Reed scored goals in a span of 1:46 to give Hershey a 2-0 lead by the 7:34 mark of the first period

Colon’s power-play goal for Rustin made it a 2-1 game with 3:04 left in the period.

Bechtel tied the game for the Vikings 5:04 into the second period but Reed and Kloss scored goals to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead with 2:21 left in the period.

Touring scored for the Vikings with 6:07 left in regulation to make it a one-goal game but Rippon answered for the Trojans with 4:51 left before scoring into an empty net with 1:43 remaining.

The Vikings outshot the Trojans 32-25.

The Class A Flyers Cup semifinals are set for tonight at Ice Line.

The start of the first game was delayed due to an issue with the ice. The first game started at approximately 7:00 p.m. The start of the second gamed will be delayed accordingly.

Top-seeded West Chester East will face fifth seed Hershey in the 6:15 opener while second-seeded Palmyra will go against third seed and six-time defending champion West Chester Bayard Rustin at 8:15. The two winners will meet next Tuesday, March 17 at the same venue in the championship game.

Bayard Rustin has won six consecutive Class A Flyers Cup titles. That streak is a record in boys’ competition. All told, Rustin has won nine Flyers Cup titles, second to the 11 La Salle has won in the Class AA and Class AAA brackets.

West Chester East has won two Cups, in 2008 and ’13. Hershey was a finalist last year.

All told, Intercounty Scholastic Hockey League teams have won 18 consecutive Class A Flyers Cups. Springfield-Delco, which now plays in the Intercounty League, was a member of the Eastern League when it won its first Cup in 2001.
