Visiting Hun School scored three goals in a span of 9:15 in the third period and went to a 5-4 win over Malvern Prep at Ice Line on Thursday. Matt Donatucci, Jack Constabile, Andrew Harder and Matt Harris scored the Friar goals.
Malvern Prep is now 6-6 on the season.
Five different players scored goals as Holy Ghost Prep scored a 5-1 win over Malvern prep on Wednesday in an APAC game at Ice Line. With the win, the Firebirds improved to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-1-0 in the APAC. The Friars slipped to 6-5 and 2-4-2-0 in the APAC.
Luke Panepresso’s goal with 3:24 left in the opening period gave the Firebirds a 1-0 led. Evan Mudrick, Byron Hartley, and Braedon Baesher added goals in the second period before Holy Ghost Prep’s John Connelly and Malvern Prep’s Matt Harris traded goals in the third.
Sean Joyce made 24 saves in goal for the win.

Class AAA (Maximum field, 8 teams)
Still without a regulation loss to Flyers Cup-eligible opposition, St. Joseph’s Prep (APAC) remains as the #1 team in this week’s AAA power rankings. Malvern Prep (APAC) climbs to #2 with an impressive week of hockey – defeating both La Salle (5-4 OT) and St. Joseph’s Prep (5-4 OT). La Salle had the opportunity to avenge that loss with a 6-1 victory over Holy Ghost Prep (APAC), who fell to #4. Father Judge (ICSHL) rounds out the top 5, on the strength of two victories of this week – one over Catholic League and AAA rival Cardinal O’Hara by a score of 6-4.
Class AA (Maximum field 16 teams)
Central Bucks South (SHSHL) and Haverford (ICSHL) added points in the win columns as they remain the top two seeds in this week’s rankings. North Penn’s (SHSHL) league victory over Top 10 Neshaminy (SHSHL) gave them the leverage to jump to #3 in this week’s rankings, jumping previous #3 Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL), who fell to Salesianum in a non-league game. Downingtown West’s two victories jumps the Whippets to #5 and CR South (SHSHL) climbs to #6 after an 11-1 victory over Central Bucks West (SHSHL), resulting in the Bucks dropping out of the top ten. Pennsbury (SHSHL), Neshaminy, and Central Bucks East (SHSHL) fill in #7 through #9 and Boyertown (ICSHL) makes their first appearance in the power rankings at #10.

Class A (Maximum field: 16 teams)
West Chester East (ICSHL) remains as the #1 seed in this week’s Class A power rankings, although suffering a minor early-week 3-0 setback to AA power Downingtown East (ICSHL). Plymouth Whitemarsh remains as the #2 seed after taking care of business with an 8-3 victory over league rival Wissahickon (SHSHL). Springfield (ICSHL) remains at #3 after defeating Penncrest 5-0 and Unionville (ICSHL) jumps to #4 after West Chester Bayard Rustin suffered a 6-3 loss to OJ Roberts (ICSHL). Palmyra (CPIHL) enters the Top 5 after defeating rival Hershey (CPIHL) by a score of 5-4 in arguably the Game of the Week across all divisions. WC Rustin’s loss drops them to #6 and Hatboro Horsham (SHSHL) slides to #7 as a result of Palmyra’s win. Strath Haven (ICSHL), West Chester Henderson (ICSHL), and Hershey round out this week’s Top 10.
South Jersey/Delaware (Maximum field: TBD)
Eastern (SJHSHL) added two victories this past week and still sits atop the NJ/DE rankings. Salesianum (ICSHL) added a nice 9-6 victory over Top 5 AA ranked Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL) and remains at #2 in this week’s rankings. Adding two wins to their record this week, Appoquinimink (ICSHL) enters the rankings at #3. Appo’s jump was aided by the fact that Shawnee (SJHSHL) suffered a 6-2 loss to Eastern and a 3-3 tie to unranked Washington Township (SJHSHL). Moorestown (SJHSHL) slides to #4 after being a victim to one of Eastern’s victories this week (7-2). Cherokee (SJHSHL) enters this week’s polls after downing Kingsway (SJHSHL) by a final score of 4-1.
Girls (Maximum field: 4 teams)
Bux-Mont (ICSHL) is your new #1 in the second edition of Flyers Cup rankings for the Girls division. The Bux-Mont ladies had a big 11-1 win over league rival Radnor (ICSHL) and also benefited from West Chester Henderson’s (ICSHL) overtime victory over previous #1 Unionville (ICSHL). Avon Grove (ICSHL) stays at #3 and WC Henderson enters this week’s polls on the strength of the win over Unionville.
HATFIELD— A half season’s worth of effort is seemingly starting to pay dividends for the La Salle Explorers. Keenan Schneider scored twice and three other players added one goal each as the Explorers bested Holy Ghost Prep 6-1 Friday night in an Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference game at Hatfield Ice.
It was the first regulation win in league play for La Salle, which improved to 1-2-1-1 in the APAC and 8-10 overall versus a schedule that would best be described as rugged.
“As fas as league games go, it’s the best three periods we’ve played this year,” said La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner. “We played consistent from start to finish. So, it’s something to build on for sure.”
The Firebirds (8-4, 2-3-0-1 the APAC) were making their first start since December 20. It was not an auspicious beginning to the new year.
“We just didn’t come to play,” said Holy Ghost Prep coach Gump Whiteside. “We laid an egg. We didn’t play well collectively and the better team beat us tonight.”
The Explorers were outshot 10-5 in the opening period but found themselves up 1-0 at its conclusion, thanks to a goal from Nathan Benner at the 3:11 mark. Aidan McCabe provided support in goal, making 10 saves in the first frame, a number of them while his mates were dealing with two Firebird power plays.
The Explorers extended their lead in the second session. Jake Armstrong scored on a shot from the left circle exactly three minutes into the period and David Bruner made it a 3-0 game at 11:10 from a deep angle on the right wing that got inside the right post past Firebird netminder Bobby Baehser.
Holy Ghost Prep (8-4, overall, 2-3-1-0 in the APAC) got a goal from Brady Baehser with 2:33 left in the period but the Explorers pulled away in the third frame on a goal from David Kimmel and two more from Schneider.
“We’re coming together as a team,” Schneider said. “Right now, we’re playing as a team and we’re just rolling, honestly.”
Muehlbronner has focused on keeping his lines together to build cohesiveness. Schneider, a sophomore was teamed with Kimmel and Jake Hammond.
“We’ve kind of fought through a lot of the adversity by trying to get the lines staying together,” he said, “not making wholesale changes. We’ve done it, burn I think there’s definitely some chemistry starting to grow between the guys.”

Chris Blango scored in the third round of a shootout to Malvern Prep a 5-4 win over St. Joseph’s Prep Friday night in an APAC matchup at the Class of 1923 Arena at the University of Pennsylvania.
Blango scored two goals in regulation for the Friars (6-4 overall, 2-3-2-0 in the APAC), who moved within two points of St. Joseph’s Prep (6-8, 3-0-0-3 in conference) in the league standings.
Michael Urbani scored twice for the Hawks, who scored twice in the third period to force overtime.

The top three teams remained the same as top-seeded CB South (SHSHL) did not take the ice this week. Second seeded Haverford High (ICSHL) took care of business against Ridley (ICSHL) with an 8-1 victory. Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL) remains in third as they defeated AAA Cardinal O’Hara (ICSHL) by a score of 4-3. Previous #4 CB West (SHSHK) suffered a 12-2 loss to Pennridge (SHSHL), dropping them to #7, and Downingtown West (ICSHL) fell from #6 to #8 after a 2-1 loss to Boyertown (ICSCHL). Ridley additionally fell out of this week’s rankings after their loss to Haverford High and were replaced by CR South (SHSHL), who enters this week at #10.

There was no change to this week’s rankings due to a large break for league and local play. Father Judge added to their win record with a 5-2 victory over Roman Catholic in ICSHL-PCL play and remains as the only non-APAC school in the top 5.

Plymouth Whitemarsh’s (SHSHL) large 12-3 victory over Lower Moreland (SHSHL) keeps them at #2, and Springfield (ICSHL) remains at #3 with no games played last week. West Chester Rustin (ICSHL) makes the climb from #5 to #4 after defeating Ches-Mont rival Downingtown East (ICSHL) by a score of 3-1. Unionville also climbs from #6 to #5 after defeating Avon Grove (ICSHL) 5-2, swapping places with #6 Hatboro-Horsham (SHSHL) who took care of business against Truman (SHSHL). WC Henderon’s loss to WC East caused a slight shake up from #7-#10. BRISTOL— Winning hockey games is much easier if a team starts out three goals to the good. That’s what happened to Holy Ghost Prep Wednesday afternoon.
The Firebirds scored three first-period goals in span of just under eight minutes and went on to a 7-4 Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference win at Hatfield Ice.
Byron Hartley scored four goals for the Firebirds, who improved to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the APAC.
It was a big win for Holy Ghost Prep on a number of levels. It was the Firebirds’ first start since reaching the semifinals of the National Scholastic Invitational Showcase cover the weekend. It was also the first meeting between the two schools since the Friars (3-4, 2-2-0-1 in the APAC) scored four times in the third period to post a 5-4 win on November 11.
“This was huge win,” Hartley said, “this was a statement win that the first game was just a fluke. We have lines one through four that are able to score and play defense. We’re very happy with ourselves but we’re not done yet.”
Holy Ghost Prep’s number-one line, Hartley, Evan Mudrick, and Anthony Sparo, took on much of the offensive load. Together the trio accumulated 13 points. Hartley had two assists to go with his four goals. Mudrick provided two goals and two assists while Sparo contributed three assists.
Hartley got things started at the 3:25 mark of the opening period with help from Mudrick and Dan Behry before making it a 2-0 game by himself just 16 seconds later. Mudrick scored off assists from his two linemates at 11:23 to give his team a three-goal lead.
After Brady Baesher made it 4-0 3:32 into the second frame, the Friars got on the board with goals from Jack Constabile and Matt Harris to make it a 4-2 game with 4:05 left in the period.

But Hartley completed his hat trick 4:09 into the third and his team went on to score two additional goals to put the game out of reach.
““It’s never good when a team goes down 3-0,” said Malvern Prep coach Bill Keenan. “We’ve been put in that position a lot this year and it’s hard to come out of it. It was nice to see our boys get a couple in response, but It’s hard to win games when you get put in hole like that.”
Junior Bobby Baehser got the win in goal.
“He played great,” said Holy Ghost Prep coach Gump Whiteside. Booby Baehser is a great teammate, and just a solid effort tonight between the pipes.”

Sometime Thursday morning the Holy Ghost Prep hockey team will head north on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the direction of Jamestown, New York where it will compete in the National Scholastic Invitational Scholastic Showcase this weekend.
The Firebirds are scheduled to face Glenbrook South (Illinois) Friday afternoon and Bethel Park (Pa.) and University School (Ohio) on Saturday; they could also see action on Sunday.
The Showcase is a regular stop for the Firebirds each season. The 16-team tournament features some top-flight high school teams but the trip is about a lot more than hockey. The weekend is structured to allow the players, regardless of their academic standing or the amount of ice time they have earned, to bond and get to know one another as people.
Junior defenseman E.J. Pohl is one of the Firebirds alternate captains. “It’s a tournament” he said, “and we obviously want to win games up there, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s more about brotherhood and coming together as a team and for me I didn’t really feel like I belonged until after the Jamestown trip my freshman year.”
Pohl recalls his anxiety when he made his first trip to Jamestown two years ago. “Obviously, I was afraid,” he said. “I was one of the younger kids on the team but after the Jamestown trip I felt like we really came together as a team and I felt more involved and like I mattered and had a place on the team.”
Pohl points out that weekend is about togetherness, on and off the ice. “We all hang out together as one,” he said, “whether we’re hanging out together, eating together playing together. It’s freshmen seniors, juniors, sophomores all hanging out together as one. And I think building relationships with those older kids really helped me to grow, as a person on the team and as a player.”
Pohl, who is carrying a 4.3 academic average on a 4.0 scale at Holy Ghost Prep, reflects on how his role with the team has evolved from anxious but eager newcomer to a veteran leader.
“Before, it was exciting for me,” he said, “but I didn’t really feel like people relied on me. I could rely on other people for help to grow, but now I feel like I’m in that role where people are looking up to me, so I’m looking to set a good example, on the ice and off the ice.
“I’m excited to get to know the freshmen and the younger people more and hopefully do the same as the older captains from the last two years did for me and bring them into the team and make them feel that they have a spot and they matter, because they do.”

Pohl notes that receiving positive reinforcement from a teammate can be more meaningful to a younger player that getting those same assurances from a coach. “It means something from the coaches but when you hear it from your peers it means a lot more,” he said. “Because you know the people you’re working alongside are rooting for you as much as you’re rooting for them,”
That mindset is in keeping with the core philosophy at Holy Ghost Prep which was founded by the Spiritans as a prep school and junior college seminary in 1897 (it became Holy Ghost Prep in 1968) and teaches its students that success is measured by the ability to help others.
“The brotherhood that we often talk about, that we have at Ghost, definitely fits into this trip a lot,” Pohl said. “Building that brotherhood with our younger teammates and even the older ones coming together as one, it definitely fits into that one goal, one team mindset that we have.”
