Even in December, points are precious. Which is Friday’s matchup between North Penn and Central Bucks East, which closed out the pre-Christmas portion of the SHSHL schedule, was so significant.

It was the Patriots who prevailed on this occasion. Charlie Keiser and Alex Wilson scored goals 51 seconds apart midway through the second period to give East a 2-1 win at Hatfield Ice.

Despite being outshot 34-15 the Patriots improved to 6-3 as the SHSHL National Division schedule hit the halfway point. North Penn (6-3) got a goal from Cole Pluck with 1:53 left in the middle period but couldn’t solve Cole Breen the rest of the way.

Breen finished with 33 saves, 15 of them in the third period.

East’s goalie played outstanding,” said North Penn coach Kevon Vaitis. “Hats off to him. We didn’t play well enough in the second period and we didn’t do enough to generate quality scoring chances.”

In boxing, there are crossroads fights. In hockey, there are crossroads games. Central Buck East and Central Bucks South found themselves at a crossroads Friday night, with each looking to vault themselves into the top tier of the SHSHL National Division standings.

It was the Titans who made the climb, on the strength of seven unanswered goals over the last two periods-plus to post an 8-1 win at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center that boosted their record to 6-1-1 in league play (6-2-1 overall. The result put South within three points of first-place Pennridge and a single point behind second-place Council Rock South, which has a game in hand.

Jeff Kvecher scored twice for the winning side, six other players scored one goal each.

Perhaps the most eye-catching stat of the evening however was the Titans limiting the Patriots (4-3) to just one goal.

South defenseman Aiden Linso touted his team’s defensive effort.

“We play together as a team,” he said, “so really we knew what we had to do.

“The offense comes back, plays [defense] and we work the puck out to our wingers, so we knew they weren’t scoring a lot of goals tonight.”

D.J. Lindenmuth gave South a 1-0 lead 2:56 into the opening period on a shot from the deep right wing. Corey Kosick tied the game at the 14:56 mark when he forced a turnover in the South defensive zone and scored on a solo effort.

The East offense, which been averaging better than four goals a game prior to Friday night, was not heard from thereafter, to the chagrin of Patriot coach Jeff Mitchell.

“I don’t know what was up with my team tonight,” he said. “It’s completely unacceptable in my opinion.”

Leading 2-1 after the first frame, the Titans broke the game open with two goals in the second period and four more in the third.

Linso, who assisted on three goals himself, stressed the importance of he and his teammates maintaining their focus after they built their lead.

“It’s real important,” he said. “Teams can come back just like that. We had to make sure everybody was doing their job. People can’t be getting goal hungry. If we stay together as a team, we’ll keep winning games like that.”

South coach Shaun McGinty noted that his team’s defensive work could have been better.
“I don’t want to take anything away from East,” he said. “They’re a good team, they’ve got some guys that can put the puck in the net but we had some guys that were trying to fly the zone a little earlier than normal and not protecting the house as we call it.

“That stuff’s going to haunt you against a C.R. South, Pennridge, against East when they’re firing.”

Ice chips—The National Division standings may look different at the end of next week. Council Rock South and Pennridge will met on Wednesday before the Rams take on the Titans the following night. Both games will be at Hatfied Ice.

SHSHL National Division Quarterfinals

Pennsbury 6, Central Bucks East 4—Brendan Macainsh scored three goals in a span of 3 minutes, 51 seconds later in the first period and the third-seeded Falcons went on to the win over the sixth-seeded Patriots Wednesday night at Grundy Arena.

Justin Marlin, Shane Gleisner, and Chris Sarver also scored for the Falcons, who will face second-seeded Pennridge in next Wednesday’s semifinals.

Corey Kosick, Carter Keiser, Stephen DiRugeris, and Patrick O’Brien scored goals for the Patriots.

Both teams will learn their Flyers Cup fate on Sunday when the field for the Class AA bracket is announced.

Neshaminy 6, Central Bucks South 3—Max Gallagher delivered a hat trick and assisted on another goal as the fourth-seeded ‘Skins bested the fifth-seeded Titans Wednesday night at Grundy Arena. Nolan Geria had a four-point night for Neshaminy, contributing two goals and two assists, while Jacob Adami also scored a goal for Neshaminy, which at one point in the third period had a 5-0 lead.

Cory Hemberger got the win in goal.

Matt Crouch, Sean Cutter, and Ryan Frey scored for the Titans.

Neshaminy will face top-seeded Council Rock South in next Wednesday’s semifinals

Both teams will learn Sunday night where they will be seeded for the Class AA Flyers Cup.

WARWICK—For Pennridge it was all in an evening’s work. The Rams remained unbeaten Wednesday night with a 5-0 win over Central Bucks East in a SHSHL Class AA matchup at Revolution Ice Gardens.

Pennridge is now a perfect 10-0 on the season, 6-0 in divisional play, and sits atop the Flyers Cup Class AA rankings to boot.

Adam Boyle scored two goals and assisted on another. Aerek Lehrhaupt also scored twice as the Rams bested the Patriots for the second time this season; they prevailed 5-1 on December 8.

“We talked before the game,” said Pennridge coach Jeff Montagna. It was a point of emphasis the way we played against them last time. We did not play well and they outworked us last game.

“We stressed that in the locker room all week, about getting off to a better start against this team and not being outworked.”

The Rams dominated the first period although they scored just once. Boyle collected a loose puck in front of the East net and tucked it inside the left post with 4:16 left in the opening session.
As is often case in such circumstances, it was a case of a goaltender keeping his team in the game. In this case was the netminder was Matt Magiacapre who was credited with no few 26 saves in the opening 17 minutes and gave the Patriots (3-7, 2-4 in the division) reason to hope.

But East’s hopes were dashed 5:10 into the second frame when Shane Dachowski scored for the Rams on a breakaway while his team was skating two men short.

Boyle added his second goal of the night at the 14:14 mark before Lehrhaupt added two goals in the third period.

Emotions boiled over with 9:21 left in regulation when the Rams’ Pierce McGinley took the Patriots’ Kyle McIntyre into the wall on the Pennridge’s offensive right wing just beyond the faceoff circle. No penalty was called on the play. Phil McIntyre stepped up in defense of his brother and teammate and wound up drawing nine minutes in penalties; minor penalties for elbowing and roughing, plus a major. As a result, the Patriots were shorthanded virtually all of the rest of the game. but they kept battling.

“I loved how we stayed in the game the whole team,” said Central Bucks East coach Jeff Mitchell. “They put a lot of shots up on us in the first period so I was starting to get a little worried that we were sitting on our heels. But, the boys kept fighting back, it just wasn’t going I for us tonight.”

Montagna works to keep his team focused on the task at hand while also acknowledging what is possible. He’s counting on his seniors to show the way.

“The seniors that we have have been through this,” he said. “They know there’s a bigger goal than just getting through the regular season and they’ve been real good about teaching the other guys that and telling them that. They know what we’re fighting for.”

Ice Chips—Ryan Pico pitched a shutout in goal, making 24 saves while Mangiacapre was credited with 44 … The Rams will make up a game with Pennsbury Monday night at Hatfield Ice (6:20 start).

C.B. East 9 Wissahickon 4

WARWICK—Ideally a hockey team will mature and evolve over the course of a tournament (see: 1980 U.S. Olympic team) or the course of a season. Central Bucks East took a step in the right direction Friday night.

Tyler Godown scored four goals and added an assist as the Patriots pulled away from Wissahickon in the last wo periods and went on to a 9-4 win in a SHSHL interconference affair at Revolution Ice Gardens.

It was the first win for the Class AA Patriots in three tries Wissahickon, the SHSHL’s defending Class A champion, dropped to 2-1.

For a young Patriot squad looking to find its way, the victory was extremely significant. Godown, one of just four seniors on the roster, stressed the importance of being a positive role model for his younger teammates.

“You just need a lot of leadership,” he said. “If you play hard, they’ll play hard. Don’t act scared, they’ll be good.”

Godown was his own best example, putting his team in front just 67 seconds after the opening faceoff before making it 2-0 at the 4:40 mark.

The Patriots were dominant for most of the opening period, outshooting their foes 10-1 at one point. Will and Nick Hussa scored goals for Wissahickon to make it a 2-2 game at period’s end but that score was misleading. Trojan goaltender Michael Bonnani kept his team in the game by making 13 saves in the opening 17 minutes.

But in the second period East scored four times to break the game open. Phil McIntyre and Aiden Schmidt scored the first two goals, both while East was shorthanded. Godown added the last two, one of them on a penalty shot, the second while his team was shorthanded.

Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington said his team simply ran out of gas.

“They were gassed after the first period because they were going so hard,” he said. “They never recovered, really”.

The teams combined for five goals in the final period. McIntyre added his second goal for the Patriots. Carter Keiser scored a goal before Schmidt scored his second of the game.

A.J. Pounds scored for the Trojans before Will Hussa scored his second of the night with 14 seconds remaining.

East coach Jeff Mitchell is looking for his younger players to understand their roles as the season progresses.

“Definitely defensive minded first,” he said. “Take care of home before you go and try to do anything fancy at the other end of the rink.

“And accountability. That’s the main thing with my younger players. I just to make sure that they actually realize what their responsibilities are out on the ice.”

Ice Chips—SHSHL games are now being played in 17-minute periods. The Patriots held a 41-28 shot advantage.

HATFIELD— Pennridge got off to a quick start Tuesday night and maintained its advantage all evening long. The Rams scored three times in the first period and went on to a 4-2 win over Central Bucks East in a Class AA Flyers Cup first-round game at Hatfield Ice.

Tenth-seeded Pennridge will face second-seeded Pennsbury in a quarterfinal game on Thursday (6:30 at Hatfield Ice).

There wasn’t a lot of flash and sizzle in what the Rams did on the ice. But they were extremely efficient and Ryan Pico was solid in goal. That’s been a winning formula for the Rams (9-4-0-1) all season and it was again on Tuesday.

“It was boring,” admitted Pennridge coach Jeff Montagna. “But I’ll take that every day of the week.”

The Rams lack the firepower they’ve enjoyed in the recent past. That necessitated a different approach this season.

“If we’re going to win, if we’re going to advance, it’s got to be defense first, second, and third,” Montagna said. “That’s not easy for kids to always want to do, they want to go. To respond this way, that’s a lot of the older guys. They’ve been there, they know how we’ve got play.”

Richie Shanks got things started for the Rams 6:39 into the opening period when he beat Patriot netminder Matt Mangiacapre from close range off a feed from Aidan Boyle. Aeryk Lehrhaupt made it a 2-0 game at the 10:08 mark before Boyle extended his team’s lead at 12:54.

Despite the three-goal deficit, the Patriots kept battling. “It was hard to keep consistent pressure in their zone,” said East coach Jeff Mitchell. “We’re missing a couple key guys in the lineup. It just got to a point where the boys gave it their all. Things just didn’t go our way at the end of everything.”

Connor Keiser got East on the scoreboard 6:48 into the second frame.

Adam Bostock made it a one-goal game when he beat Ryan Pico 3:19 into the third period. But Blake Stewart answered back for Pennridge 71 seconds later to complete the scoring.

The seventh-seeded Patriots, who we’re playing their first game since March 17, saw their late hopes fade thanks to a pair of late penalties; Tyler Godown and Phil McIntyre were accessed unsportsmanlike conduct penalties with 1:28 left in regulation, forcing East to finish the game with two players in the penalty box. Two other Patriots drew unsportsmanlike conduct penalties following the final buzzer.It marked the conclusion to a season in which the Patriots (6-4-1-1) faced a plethora of unique challenges.

“There were a lot of things that were out of our hands this year,” Mitchell said. I feel like my group did the best they could given the hand that they were dealt.”

Pennsbury 7, C.B. East 6 OT

Bristol—Considering two of the most potent offensive teams in the SHSHL’s National/Continental Division were sharing the ice Thursday night, the goings on were not unexpected. Brendan Macainsh’s goal with 1:13 remaining in overtime gave Pennsbury a 7-6 win over Central Bucks East to conclude an entertaining evening of hockey at Grundy Arena.

Macainsh forced a turnover at the Patriots’ blue line and walked in on Matt Mangiacapre to score the game-winning goal and give his team its fourth consecutive win, the last two of which have come in overtime. The Falcons now stand at 5-1 overall, 3-0 in divisional play.

“At practice on Monday I told them that ‘I think this will probably be our toughest game of the season,’” said Pennsbury coach Ryan Daley. “I think it proved to be our toughest game of the season.”

The biggest difference maker in the game was Pennsbury goaltender Marek Jorgenson who finished with 32 saves.

“Some of his saves were just robberies,” Daley said. “It was the only way you could describe it. He played great, I was really happy with his performance. I wish we could have done a little better job in front of him.”

Jorgenson was especially busy in the first two periods, stopping 22 shots. The first frame saw the two teams combine for seven goals. The Falcons built a 4-1 lead but Adam Schmidt, Chris Mangiacapre, and Tyler Godown scored for the Patriots (2-3, 0-2-0-1 in divisional play) in a span of just over eight minutes to tie the game 5:26 into the second period.

Shane Siegmund and Edward Bossler scored goals to give Pennsbury a two-goal lead with 8:51 left in regulation, but Adam Bostock and Godown responded for the Patriots to force overtime.

The loss was the third straight for the Patriots, who are dealing with the absence of forward Phil McIntyre who is out indefinitely with a concussion.

East coach Jeff Mitchell says his players need to improve their pregame preparation. “I think my boys need to do a better job preparing before games,” he said. “We’ve also had a couple injuries over the past two weeks. It’s a tough course to navigate right now but tonight, against the first-place team in the division right now, is probably a step in the right direction.”

For his part, Daley feels the Falcons have exceeded his expectations as the compressed regular season hits the halfway point.

“We’re in a better spot than I could have imagined,” he said. “I knew we had a good team this year but obviously until you start playing, you don’t know exactly what you have, and they’ve surprised me in the best way.”

HATFIELD— Like other high-school teams in the area, Central Bucks East waited a long time to play hockey. The Patriots took the ice against Central Bucks West Thursday night at Hatfield Ice with an abundance of energy and it showed.

Adam Bostock scored five goals as the Patriots rolled to an 11-1 season-opening SHSHL win.
With one of the area’s most experienced lineups on hand, East enters the season with high expectations. Thursday’s performance did nothing to diminish those expectations.

Bostock gave his team the lead just 56 seconds after the opening faceoff. He completed a hat trick before the first period ended with his team leading 6-0. But three other players also scored goals, a sign of the balance the Patriots are looking to find.

“It’s hard to get a solid third or fourth line running around,” said East coach Jeff Mitchell. “But, I’m mainly going to put that on my upperclassmen. They’re their on the first and second lines to to show the lesser lines what to do, where their other guys are at. It’s just communication and chemistry,”

The Patriots stretched the lead to 9-0 by the end of the second frame. Bostock, a senior, stressed the importance of the veterans showing the way.

“I think it’s very important for the seniors to step up and lead the younger guys,” he said. “The younger guys are going to have four more years of this, so we have to teach them how to do it and continue the legacy for us at East.”

Chris Mangiacapre joined Bostock as a multiple-goal scorer, scoring twice. Matt Mangiacapre finished his night’s work with 19 saves in goal.

Ryan Haywood scored West’s only goal 4:11 into the third period. For a young Bucks squad, Thursday’s game was baptism under live fire. Kyle Fasolak started in goal but was relieved by Liam Rogers before the first period ended.Rogers wound up being credited with 56 saves.

“What our job is right now is take a young group and teach them how to play,” said West coach Dave Baun, “and get them to play as a team and play up to their capabilities.

“I think we have some talent, we have some players with good attitudes, and if you have thosetwo things they can take you a long way.”

Notes—Chris McIntryre, who was expected to be the Patriots’ starting goaltender this year, has given up hockey. McIntyre, a senior, is planning to enlist in the United States Marine Corps following graduation.
