2021 Flyers Cup Selections

A total of 40 teams will take part in the 42nd annual Flyers Cup tournament. The field for the scholastic hockey showcase was announced Sunday evening. Then tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 5.

Malvern Prep, the regular-season champion of the Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference, is the top seed in the eight-team Class AAA bracket. Downingtown West will be on top of the Class AA bracket, which will feature 16 teams. The 10-team Class A bracket is headed by West Chester East, while Downingtown West will head the six-team girls’ bracket.

The Class AA tournament begins on April 6 with eight first-round games.

The champions in the three boys’ divisions will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins Cup winners in the state championship games on Saturday, April 24.

Flyers Cup Committee Names Eligible Teams

The countdown to the 42nd annual Flyers Cup tournament has officially begun with the revelation of the teams that are eligible to be selected for the tournament field.

The Flyers Cup Committee revealed a list of 64 tournament-eligible teams on Thursday morning.

The 64 teams represent the InterCounty Scholastic Hockey League, the Suburban High School Hockey League, the Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference, the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey league, and the state of Delaware.

There will be four brackets: Class A for public schools with enrollments of 625 males or fewer (based on PIAA enrollment figures); Class AA for public schools with male enrollments exceeding 625, Class AAA for private schools, and girls.

Tournament play is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 5. The number of teams that will comprise each bracket has yet to be determined by the Flyers Cup Committee.

The Flyers Cup is an invitational tournament and there are no automatic bids.

Last year’s tournament was called off prior to completion because of Covid-19 issues.

The latest edition of the Flyers Cup power rankings include some changes in Class AAA. La Salle, the defending Flyers Cup and state  champion, has moved to the top of the rankings thanks to a 5-4 shootout win over St. Joseph’s Prep last Friday.

Still without a regulation loss to Flyers Cup-eligible opposition, St. Joseph’s Prep (APAC) remains as the #1 team in this week’s AAA power rankings. Malvern Prep (APAC) climbs to #2 with an impressive week of hockey – defeating both La Salle (5-4 OT) and St. Joseph’s Prep (5-4 OT). La Salle had the opportunity to avenge that loss with a 6-1 victory over Holy Ghost Prep (APAC), who fell to #4. Father Judge (ICSHL) rounds out the top 5, on the strength of two victories of this week – one over Catholic League and AAA rival Cardinal O’Hara by a score of 6-4.

Central Bucks South (SHSHL) and Haverford (ICSHL) added points in the win columns as they remain the top two seeds in this week’s rankings. North Penn’s (SHSHL) league victory over Top 10 Neshaminy (SHSHL) gave them the leverage to jump to #3 in this week’s rankings, jumping previous #3 Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL), who fell to Salesianum in a non-league game. Downingtown West’s two victories jumps the Whippets to #5 and CR South (SHSHL) climbs to #6 after an 11-1 victory over Central Bucks West (SHSHL), resulting in the Bucks dropping out of the top ten. Pennsbury (SHSHL), Neshaminy, and Central Bucks East (SHSHL) fill in #7 through #9 and Boyertown (ICSHL) makes their first appearance in the power rankings at #10.

Plymouth Whitemarsh remains as the #2 seed after taking care of business with an 8-3 victory over league rival Wissahickon (SHSHL). Springfield (ICSHL) remains at #3 after defeating Penncrest 5-0 and Unionville (ICSHL) jumps to #4 after West Chester Bayard Rustin suffered a 6-3 loss to OJ Roberts (ICSHL). Palmyra (CPIHL) enters the Top 5 after defeating rival Hershey (CPIHL) by a score of 5-4 in arguably the Game of the Week across all divisions. WC Rustin’s loss drops them to #6 and Hatboro Horsham (SHSHL) slides to #7 as a result of Palmyra’s win. Strath Haven (ICSHL), West Chester Henderson (ICSHL), and Hershey round out this week’s Top 10.

Eastern (SJHSHL) added two victories this past week and still sits atop the NJ/DE rankings. Salesianum (ICSHL) added a nice 9-6 victory over Top 5 AA ranked Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL) and remains at #2 in this week’s rankings. Adding two wins to their record this week, Appoquinimink (ICSHL) enters the rankings at #3. Appo’s jump was aided by the fact that Shawnee (SJHSHL) suffered a 6-2 loss to Eastern and a 3-3 tie to unranked Washington Township (SJHSHL).  Moorestown (SJHSHL) slides to #4 after being a victim to one of Eastern’s victories this week (7-2).  Cherokee (SJHSHL) enters this week’s polls after downing Kingsway (SJHSHL) by a final score of 4-1.

The Bux-Mont ladies had a big 11-1 win over league rival Radnor (ICSHL) and also benefited from West Chester Henderson’s (ICSHL) overtime victory over previous #1 Unionville (ICSHL). Avon Grove (ICSHL) stays at #3 and WC Henderson enters this week’s polls on the strength of the win over Unionville.

Previous #4 CB West (SHSHK) suffered a 12-2 loss to Pennridge (SHSHL), dropping them to #7, and Downingtown West (ICSHL) fell from #6 to #8 after a 2-1 loss to Boyertown (ICSCHL). Ridley additionally fell out of this week’s rankings after their loss to Haverford High and were replaced by CR South (SHSHL), who enters this week at #10.

Father Judge added to their win record with a 5-2 victory over Roman Catholic in ICSHL-PCL play and remains as the only non-APAC school in the top 5.

Plymouth Whitemarsh’s (SHSHL) large 12-3 victory over Lower Moreland (SHSHL) keeps them at #2, and Springfield (ICSHL) remains at #3 with no games played last week. West Chester Rustin (ICSHL) makes the climb from #5 to #4 after defeating Ches-Mont rival Downingtown East (ICSHL) by a score of 3-1. Unionville also climbs from #6 to #5 after defeating Avon Grove (ICSHL) 5-2, swapping places with #6 Hatboro-Horsham (SHSHL) who took care of business against Truman (SHSHL). WC Henderon’s loss to WC East caused a slight shake up from #7-#10. Palmyra (CPIHL) and Hershey (CPIHL) both benefitted from Henderson’s loss, and Strath Haven (ICSHL) remained at #8 after a 7-2 victory over Garnet Valley (ICSHL).

Intercounty League Sets All-Star Games

The InterCounty Scholastic Hockey League has the schedule for its traditional All-Star games. All four games will be played at Ice Line in West Goshen Township on New Year’s Day

The varsity all-star games schedule is:

Game 1: 1pm Girls
Game 2: 3pm Liberty North vs Liberty South
Game 3: 5pm Chesmont vs Central
Game 4: 7pm PCL

All four games will be streamed live via HockeyTV.
