HATFIELD— Aries Carangi stepped up when his team needed him. The La Salle netminder made 38 saves Wednesday afternoon as the Explorers bested Hun School 3-1 at Hatfield Ice in a APAC/Mid-Atlantic Prep League joust.
Carangi, a junior, did his best work in the third period when he stopped 15 shots to lead his team to its third straight win (3-4 overall, 1-2 APAC, 3-0 MAPL). Five of those saves came during a Hun School (4-3, 0-1-1-0 in the APAC, 0-2 MAPL) power play when the Explorers’ Chase Hannon drew a roughing penalty with 5:01 left in regulation.
“Coming into the third, I got real focused up,” Carangi said. “Just took it one shot at a time and I went on from there.”
Carangi pointed out the Explorers are figuring out how to blend their collective abilities after a slow start to the season.
“I think the guys have just all bought into ‘defense first,’ he said. “Move into the neutral zone, then go to the offensive zone.”
La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner celebrated the fact his team embraced the ‘back to basics’ mindset.
“We seem to be playing a pretty simple game but we’re playing hard,” he said. “It was a tough game. A tough, physical game.”
Gavin O’ Connell gave La Salle a 1-0 lead when he put in a rebound 9:55 into the first period, beating the Raiders’ Jack Borek. Chris Wnek made it 2-0 just 38 seconds into the second frame. Scott Richmond’s shorthanded goal off a La Salle turnover at the 10:55 mark cut the Explorer lead in half.
The Explorers’ Ryan Desmond scored the only goal of the third period at the 5:37 mark on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle after a dash up the wing.
The Raiders outshot their foes 15-5 in the final period but their coach, Ian McNally was quick to point out many of those shots did not come from prime locations.
“We had (38) shots and pretty limited action from our chances,” he said. We’re trying the same things over and over again, unfortunately.”
McNally says he’s addressing the issue with his players in practice. “How can we cover the zone differently? How can we staring passes together. Hope can we create separation between you and the (defense) so we’re not just walking in and taking a wrist shot. Either (the defense block it or the goalie blocks it.
“There’s no secondary chance. There’s no puck movement that makes everybody move left to right. We keep talking about it and we keep not doing it. So, we deserved to lose 3-1.”

HATFIELD—After a first start, La Salle had to hold on in the stretch. Jack Lindmar’s goal with 9:06 remaining in regulation was the game winner as the Explorers held off Portledge School 3-2 Monday afternoon at Hatfield Ice.
La Salle now stands at 2-4 overall, having won its first two Mid-Atlantic Prep League starts.
Head Coach Wally Muehlbronner is embracing a back-to-basics approach. “That’s what we’re trying to get (the players) to believe in,” he said. “I think we’re starting to do it.”
The Explorers controlled play in the opening period, outshooting the Panthers 9-0 in the early going. Dan Whittock put the hosts in front 6:04 into the period with a goal off an offensive left-wing faceoff. Ryan Desmond made it 2-0 at the 15:48 mark.
Had it not been for the play of Jake Anderson in the Panther net (eight first-period saves), the score might have gotten out of hand.
Instead, the scoreline remained unchanged heading into the third period when Portledge (1-2 overall) came out flying. Eric Kold scored off a La Salle turnover 47 seconds into the final frame to make it a one-goal game and give the Panthers a surge of emotional energy.
For their part, the Explorers focused on sticking to their game plan.
“I knew, obviously, they were going to come out hard,” Whittock said. Everyone knew that. If we stick to our game plan and with each other, we’ll be fine.”
Lindmar’s goal gave the hosts some breathing room, but the Panthers cut the deficit in half with 3:19 remaining.
Portledge got a big opportunity with 1:51 left in regulation when La Salle’s Chris Wnek was sent to the box for cross checking.
With the ensuing faceoff coming inside the La Salle blue line, Anderson was halfway out of his net. When his team won the draw he headed for the bench, giving the Panthers a six-on-four advantage.
But the Explorers held firm. Goaltender Will Braun made some stops; his best came with 25 seconds to go to help preserve the win.
Whittock notes he and his teammates are starting to get a sense of just what kind of team they are. “I think we know obviously, we might not put up five goals (a game),” he said. “If we stay strong in the defensive zone, cover our guys in front of the net, and everything like that, everything else is just going to click. Our chances will come.”

HATFIELD—The hockey season is only a few weeks old but La Salle took a demanding test Tuesday afternoon. Patrick Reilly scored two goals to lead Christian Academy to a 5-1 win over the Explorers in a non-league matchup at the Hatfield Ice Arena’s Green Rink.
The Colts, who have won eight New Jersey state championships in their history, have started their 2021-22 schedule with two wins. La Salle dropped to 0-4.
“We knew they were good,” said La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner. “They were fast, they moved the puck well. They’re a good, strong team.”
The Colts got on the board just 41 seconds into the opening period on a goal from Leighton Blesiadecki, who beat Wilum Braun in the La Salle net. Reilly made it 2-0 at the 12:47 mark before adding his second goal with 1:22 left in the period.
For a team that has scored just five goals in its first four games, the three-goal deficit was a steep hill to climb. To complicate matters further, the Explorers lost senior forward Keenan Schneider late in the period with an upper-body injury.
Zachary Wagnon made it a 4-0 game with his own power-play goal 8:06 into the middle period before assisting on Sean Guinnessey’s effort at 14:43.
La Salle got on the board 59 seconds into the final period when Ryan Desmond was able to solve Christian Brothers Academy netminder John Donohoe.
Muehlbronner took some steps on Tuesday to try to ease the Explorers’ goal-scoring woes. “We mixed the lines up a little bit,” he said. “I think we’re making progress, but we’ve just got to keep at it.”
Muelbronner is expecting his team to take some lessons away from the loss.
“They certainly should,” he said. “I think one thing we have to realize is how much we have to simplify our game when we play against a team like that. We didn’t really do it. We were holding on to the puck too long and they were on us quick. They took us off the puck, created plays.
“They moved the puck extremely well, so I guess our younger guys can learn from that. But we didn’t adapt to it quick enough.”
Ice Chips—The Colts outshot the Explorers 35-26. The Explorers will open Mid-Atlantic Prep League play next Wednesday on the road against Wyoming Seminary.

A fast start proved decisive for Holy Ghost Prep Wednesday afternoon. The Firebirds scored twice before the game was six minutes old and went on to a 3-1 win over La Salle in an APAC encounter at Hatfield Ice Arena.
Landon Stout beat La Salle netminder Will Braun just 41 seconds after the opening faceoff off a dash down the right wing, and Sean Marshall added a power-play goal at the 5:32 mark as Holy Ghost Prep won its second straight start and its conference opener.
Coach Gump Whiteside appreciated his team’s energy level, particularly in the first period.
“I thought we came out with a good start,” he said. “Any time you play La Salle, you’ve got to be on your toes.”
La Salle (0-2 overall and in the APAC) cut the deficit in half when Matthew Conforti scored just 12 seconds into the middle period. It was the Explorers first goal of the season and seemed to give them an energy boost; La Salle outshot the Firebirds 22-12 over the finals 34 minutes, but couldn’t pocket another goal, thanks in large part to the work of Firebird goaltender Jason Soule. The senior and first-year starter finished with 34 saves.
“Jay was huge for us,” Whiteside said. “ He’s playing really well and the kids really rally around him.”
Marshall finished the scoring with an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining in the final period. “We said in the the locker room before the game ‘We’ve got to come out strong,’” he said. “It’s a great team on the other side. I knew we had to come out strong, and we did. We put it too them in the first couple minutes and scored two quick.
“We lost our momentum a little bit but we got it back. We battled in the third period and never gave up.”
Despite the final result, La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner took an abundance of positives away from the encounter.
“I thought it was a good game,” he said. “After we gave up two, we settled in pretty well.
“I think Will played a great game after he settled down a little bit, and our second and third period, I thought we played really well.
“We’ve got to find a way to start scoring some goals.”
Marshall noted the game was the latest in a long strong of close encounters between the Firebirds and the Explorers. “Both teams are good every year,” he said, “A lot of people on both teams are seniors. When they graduate, new people come in. They battle every game.”
Prior to the opening face-off, the Holy Ghost Prep players presented their counterparts at La Salle a memorial puck in honor of La Salle student-athlete Blake Barklage.

La Salle and Holy Ghost Prep begin Wednesday’s third period
There was an abundance of raw competitive energy on display when Malvern Prep and La Salle took the ice Friday evening. Just not a lot of goals.
Pierre Larocque scored off a neutral-zone faceoff and a La Salle turnover with 5:55 remaining in regulation and Matt Harris added a goal into an empty net in the waning seconds to give the Friars a 2-0 win at Hatfield Ice Arena in the opening game of the Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference campaign.
Friday’s game was a rematch off the Friars’ overtime win in the Class 3A Flyers Cup final last April and although some names and faces had changed, the two teams seemingly picked up where they left off.
“We knew La Salle was going to be tough,” said Malvern Prep coach Bill Keenan. “We picked up right where we left off last year in a tough battle.
“We got returning guys, they’ve got returning guys, we knew it would be a tough game and we were up for the challenge.”
Friday’s game soon became a goaltending duel with the Friars’ Anthony Perti and the Explorers’ Aries Carangi squaring off at opposite ends of the ice. Between them, the pair stopped 65 shots.
“You don’t see (a goaltending duel) a lot,” Perti said, “but my guys savored this game, we knew it was going to be a tough game; expectations were met.
“You’re going to get the bounce if you play the right way.”
Keenan, who saw his team improve to 2-1 overall, noted both goaltenders came up big when their best was needed. “Anthony has been great,” he said. “He was the MVP last year. He’s looked good so far this year, and a credit to La Salle’s goalie. We peppered him with shots and he came up big a lot.”
La Salle head coach Wally Muehlbronner noted that his team paid a high price for a mistake. “We turned it over and they capitalized like they certainly can,” he said “They’re a good team. But for a first game, I think it was probably good for both teams.”
Muehlbronner was asked what adjustments are required of players at the APAC level, whether they are new to the lineup entirely, or assuming new roles.
“They do play on good teams outside of La Salle so they do play at a pretty good pace,” he said. “The physical side shift to shift could be a little different, so I think that’s going to be an adjustment they’re going to have to get used to, but all in all, I think the young guys did a pretty sound job.”
