Neshaminy 6, Abington 2

BRISTOL‑ The point has come in the Suburban High School Hockey League season, when points are becoming precious. Neshaminy picked up two important points in the standings Thursday night.

Rob Seewagen scored three goals and added a pair of assists to propel his team to a 6-2 win over shorthanded Abington at Grundy Arena that was last seen heading for the exit at the final buzzer to beat the approaching snow.

The win lifted Neshaminy to 4-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. Seewagen himself leads his team in scoring with 15 goals and nine assists for 24 points.

The sophomore got things started by scoring the game’s first goal 1:57 into the first and assisting on Jacob Helms’s effort 62 seconds later.

“A lot of these kids I’ve grown up with,” Seewagen said. “Not only on the ice are we clicking, but in the locker room we’re really tight, we have a really good bond.”

Seewagen said the size of the squad lends to and increases the significance of the closeness of the group. “We don’t have a lot of guys,” he said. “On any given night, we only 13-14 guys, including the goalie. It’s definitely difficult when you’re out there every other shift, but when we’re that close like that, every shift you’re out there you’re playing for each other.”

The Galloping Ghosts (3-5-2, 2-3-1) got back in the game for a time when consecutive penalties to Joey DeMatteo (cross checking) and Joey Buday (tripping) gave them a two-man advantage for 56 seconds.

Neshaminy was able to kill one penalty buy not the second; Tommy Rourke scored the power-play goal at the 6:12 mark of the period, only to see DeMatteo answer back at 8:53.

Abington took the ice down four skaters and one backup goaltender for various reasons. Coach Ken Brzozowski said he team is still evolving. “We work hard in practice,” he said. “We’re missing a little bit of that translation from what we do I practice to the games. I think one we can get that to click we’ll continue to be competitive at the (Class AA level).”

Seewagen and Helms scored second-period goals for Neshaminy in a span of just 50 seconds.

Perry Carpenter, Abington’s top sniper, scored to make it a 5-2 with 4:07 left in the middle period before Seewagen completed his hat trick 6:44 into the third.

Council Rock South 5, Neshaminy 1

WARWICK—The calendar has turned to January. And, as predictably as an appearance of the full moon, Council Rock South is rounding into form.

Four unanswered third-period goals enabled the Golden Hawks to pull away from Neshaminy 5-1 Wednesday night in a Suburban High School Hockey League Class 2A matchup at Revolution Ice Gardens. Five different players scored goals as South improved to 2-1-1 in league play and 5-2-2 overall. The Hawks have three wins and a tie in their last five starts dating back to Thanksgiving Eve. Neshaminy dropped to 3-4-1 and 2-3.

“It’s good when you get contributions from everybody,” said South coach Joe Houk. “That’s the key to everything. That’s all different lines too. The third line was we had was basically a line of (junior varsity) guys.”

Andrew Stoychev led the way for South with a goal and two assists. His goal 30 seconds into the third period provided to be the game winner.  Logan Hurwitz also had a three-point night; three assists.

Despite the fact that there were several junior varsity players in the South lineup, Stoychev said all the pieces fit.

“Both our teams work together,” the senior said. “We saw what was happening with  all of our lines, we know how to play with each other and we just make stuff work out.”
The game was  scoreless for virtually all of the first two periods. Neshaminy’s Zach MacNamee broke the scoreless deadlock when he beat South netminder Jimmy Sweeney from close range with just 52 seconds left in the second session.

It took only 22 seconds for John Hearn to deliver the equalizer, a one-timer from the left faceoff circle.

Stoychev put South in front for good 30 seconds into the final period. Billy Harrelson, Cameron Schwartz, and Kenny Duffield followed with goals of their own over the next 7:42.

“We came out flat,” said Neshaminy coach Matt DeMatteo. “The biggest thing for us I think is that we turned too many pucks over in transition and we did a poor job getting the puck out of the zone. And when you let that team keep the puck in, and sustain pressure, sooner or later the puck is going to go in your net.”

 

Notes—South had a 21-16 wedge in shots. The game featured just three minor penalties.

Central Bucks East 6, Neshaminy 3

They’re doing it quietly, but the Central Bucks East Patriots are off to a solid start in the Suburban High School Hockey League. Freshman Sean Gorman scored two goals as East stayed unbeaten with a 6-3 win over Neshaminy Monday night at Revolution Ice Gardens.

The Patriots have won four straight after a season-opening tie and are 2-0 in the SHSHL Class 2A league standings
East coach Ken Latchum was elated at his team’s effort but was particularly enthused about his third line; Richard Kaczmarczyk (goal), Dan Tori (two assists), and Brendan Lynch (goal) combined for four points.

“The third line made me ecstatic,” Latchum said. “They were our best line. They played awesome”
The first period started with a shootout, a flurry of four goals, two each way, in a span of just 3:35. Robert Seewagen got things started for Neshaminy (2-1-1, 2-1 in the league) when he sped up the center of the ice and beat East goaltender Matt Oganowski with a shot from four strides inside the blue line just 63 seconds after the opening faceoff. Owen Connor answered for the Patriots from the high slot at 2:32. Seewagen scored his second goal on a power-play effort at 3:25 but Jason Cluckey tied the game for East just 15 seconds later.

The Patriots added two goals late in the period, from Kaczmarcyzk at 14:12 and Gorman on a two-on-one situation at 15:33. They extended their lead in the second frame on goals from Lynch at 5:20 and Gorman at 12:41.

Connor noted that he and his teammates did the little things well. “We played our positions really well,” he said. “We got the puck in deep and applied a lot of pressure.”

The Patriots were swarming all around Neshaminy goaltender Steven Glik. Neshaminy assistant coach Mike McColgan, filling in for the absent  Matt DeMatteo, said his team didn’t give their netminder a lot of help, particularly in the first period. “We didn’t knock guys down in front of the net,” he said. “We just kind of let them have a free hand. The goaltender had three shots he didn’t really see, three goals.

“We had a lack of energy on our forecheck. It really wasn’t buzzing at all for us tonight.”

Brett Nelson scored the goal of the game for Neshaminy at the 9:07 mark of the third period.

The Patriots had a 39-23 advantage in shots. Both goaltenders were sharp after the run-and-gun first period. Oganoswski finished with 20 saves, including a sensational stop on Neshaminy’s Joey DeMatteo in the third period while Glik, one of the premier netminders in the area, finished with 33 saves.

Latchum was pleased to get a quality effort from his entire lineup. “You need three lines to play,” he said. You want to win, you need three lines.”
