Central Buck South 13, Central Bucks West 3

HATFIELD—Central Bucks South had some high-performance fuel in their gas tanks Monday night. The Titans built a 5-0 first-period lead and went on to defeat Central Bucks West 13-3 in a Suburban High School Hockey League Class AA quarterfinal at Hatfield Ice that was terminated with 8:17 left in the third period. The top-seeded Titans (15-0-0-1) will advance to a Wednesday semifinal against Neshaminy in this same venue Wednesday night (6:30). Neshaminy, the fourth seed, bested fifth seed Central Bucks East 5-3 in another Monday quarterfinal.

Colin Abbonizio scored six goals and assisted on another for the Titans, who are seeking their ninth SHSHL title. Dominic Patrone and Connor Gaffney scored two goals each.

Jake Lang, who had been out of the lineup for several weeks for the eighth-seeded Bucks, was on the ice for the opening faceoff and wound up scoring two goals.

The Titans are already assured of the top seed in the upcoming Flyers Cup tournament; the SHSHL playoffs do not impact the Flyers Cup seedings. But any notion that South might coast through the league tournament was immediately dispelled.

Abbonizio scored the game’s first goal at the 6:23 mark of the first period and Aidan Gaffney made it 2-0 just 10 seconds later. Abbonizio completed a hat trick before the first period ended.

“We were so fired up- to get playoffs going,” he said. “We really had everyone going. Everyone is just so excited that we put everything out there.”

Abbonizio, the Titans’ captain, emphasized that the SHSHL title matters a lot to he and his teammates. “We never look past this tournament,” he said. “Obviously, South has gad a lot of success in past years. These trophies (for winning the regular season and league titles) are an appetizer. We want to get those trophies and we want more.”

By the end of the second period South had built a 10-0 lead but they maintained their focus to the final buzzer. Their coach, Shaun McGinty, would have it no other way.
“We break it down season by season,” he said. “Tonight is the second season. Everybody is 0-0-0. What happened last week is over We all know each other in this second season.”

Both teams are locked into their Flyers Cup seeds. The top-seeded Titans will host number-16 Conestoga next Tuesday at Hatfield Ice (6:40 start). The 15th-seeded Bucks (7-7-2-1) will face second seed Haverford at the Skatium at 7:00 that same evening.

Central Bucks South 7, Neshaminy 3

HATFIELD— For roughly a decade now, Central Bucks South has set the standard against which the rest of the Suburban High School Hockey League is measured. On Thursday night, the Titans showed they still hold that distinction although it took them some time to do so.

Matt Buchinski, Nolan Geria, and Joey DeMatteo propelled Neshaminy to a 3-0 first-period lead. But the Titans woke up and scored five consecutive goals in the second period before adding two more in the third.

The 7-3 victory that resulted put South alone at the top of the SHSHL Class AA standings at 4-0 (6-0-0-1 overall). It was a win that didn’t come easily after the slow start but what transpired at Hatfield Ice Thursday night will serve as a primer for March, when both the Titans and the ‘Skins (6-2, 5-1) figure to be legitimate Flyers Cup contenders.

If there was a single moment that triggered the comeback, it might have been at the 7:02 mark of the first period following Geria’s goal when South coach Shaun McGinity called the only timeout he was permitted and delivered what would best be termed an inspirational address.

“I don’s think they deliberately came unprepared,” McGinity said of his troops. “I don’t think they overlooked Neshaminy. I don’t think they overlooked anybody or through anybody. Neshaminy has got firepower. (The Titans) just didn’t come ready to play.”

It took a while for McGinty’s message to sink in; DeMatteo put his team up 3-0 with 3:58 to play in the period.

But in the second frame, the Titans got rolling. Colin Abbonizio scored just 37 seconds into the period. Matt Milanesi made it a 3-2 game at the 3:18 mark off a feed from Dominic Patrone to complete a lovely session of tic-tac-toe. Goals from Abbonizio and Patrone followed before Abbonizio completed a hat trick at the 13:25 mark to give South a 5-3 lead.

All five goals came at even strength.
Patrone scored on a shorthanded effort 1:47 into the third period before Ryan Gingras scored a power-play goal with 8:33 left in the game.

“A lot of the (comeback effort) was from the coaches,” Abbonizio said. “They really kept us in it. We just went out there and played our game and we got seven goals.”

The Titans are young in spots this season but Abbonizio, the team’s captain, says the newcomers are taking their cues from the veterans. “The younger guys are always listening,” he said. “They’re willing to take whatever they can get from the older guys. I think their cooperation could contribute to us really going a long way.”

Neshaminy coach Matt DeMatteo noted his team couldn’t sustain its early momentum. “We had them on the ropes,” he said. “We were up 3-0 in the first period and the guys were playing the game plan. They switched some things up and we just adapt as well as I’d hoped.”

Despite the loss, the ‘Skins proved they belong on the list of the SHSHL’s upper-echelon teams. “Neshaminy’s a great team,” Abbonizio said. “They’re a great team and that’s something that we’ve told these guys. That was a playoff game right there.”

Central Bucks South 7, Council Rock South 2

WARWICK—It took a while for Central Bucks South to get into the flow of things Wednesday night. Thirty-two minutes of playing time to be exact.

After skating through two sluggish periods at Revolution Ice Gardens Wednesday night, the Titans found themselves locked in a 2-2 tie with Council Rock South. The four-time defending Suburban High School Hockey League Class AA champions erupted for five goals in the final stanza and went on to a 7-2 win that was more taxing than satisfying.

Reis Braccio, Colin Abbonizio, D.J. Loverdi, Harry McLaughin, and Dominic Patrone all scored third-period goals for the Titans, who improved to 11-3-1 overall and 9-0-1 in league play.

The win was their fifth straight, but C.B. South coach Shaun McGinty was not in a celebratory mood.

“I’m not happy at all,” he said. “(C.R. South) did a great job, Joe (Houk) did a great job coaching. I’m sure they stuck to their game plan … We weren’t ready.”

The Titans outshot the Golden Hawks (6-7-2, 3-5-2) 54-10. Brett Magloff, Council Rock South’s junior goaltender, was stellar for two periods and then some, he finished the evening with 50 saves.

“We kind of had a game plan coming in,” Houk said. “We wanted to make sure that as long as he was seeing everything, we were good.
The Golden Hawks took a 1-0 when Matt Constantini scored the only goal of the first period at 12:46, a period that saw the Titans outshoot their foes 17-6.

“We were getting the shots on net,” Abbonizio said, “But we couldn’t bury them. We’ve got to finish those shots.”

Nick Klein tied the game for the Titans 25 seconds into the second period, but Bill Harrelson put the Golden Hawks back in front at 2:38 with a shot from the left wing that caromed off the near post and somehow found its way across the goal line.

When Matt Milanesi scored for the Titans at 5:46 the two teams were even once more and stayed that way until the third-period barrage that saw the Titans score five times in a span of 11:24. The last two came when they were shorthanded.

“I thought we stuck to it,” Houk said, “with us getting the puck deep and taking their lanes away. They were getting a little bit frustrated but then they scored those two shorthanded to put the nail in the coffin.”

McGinty stated aloud what was obvious to onlookers, the Titans need to step up their game with the postseason now less than two weeks away.

“They need to do better,” he said. “We’ve got Pennridge next week (in a game that could decide the regular-season championship) and then we’ve got SHSHL (playoffs) and then we’ve got the Flyers Cup and it’s just not going to work. We got lucky tonight to finally turn it on at the end.”

Central Bucks South Beats Central Bucks West in SHSHL Matchup

The final score did not reflect what transpired at Revolution Ice Gardens Wednesday night.

Central Bucks South bested Central Bucks West 5-1 in a Suburban High School Hockey League Class AA matchup while outshooting their opponents 51-12. But the win didn’t come easily to the Titans (1-2, 1-0 SHSHL), who broke the game open with four goals in the third period but had their hands full until then.

That was due primarily to the work Jake Coddington in the Bucks’ net. The junior turned aside 46 of 51 shots.

“Jake Coddington was spectacular,” said West coach Dave Baun. “I wanted to keep it close at the end just for Jake Coddington because I thought that 5-1 didn’t do him justice.”

The Bucks (1-1, 0-1) kept the game close for two periods. The Titans dominated the first frame, outshooting West 19-1, but wound up with just one goal for their efforts. That goal came from Reis Braccio at the 11:23 mark.

The Bucks tied the game just 72 seconds into the second period. The Titans’ D.J. Loverdi was in the box for high sticking when Pavel Serhiayenka scored on a wrister from the left point.

South continued to dominate the game but couldn’t get the puck past Coddington. At period’s end, the shot margin was 34-8 in South’s favor but the score remained 1-1, a circumstance South coach Shaun McGinty found perplexing.

“All the credit to West,” he said, but my guys, I don’t feel as though they came ready, they weren’t prepared.”

Between the second and third period, McGinty encouraged his troops to pick up their intensity level. The result was four goals in a span of 13:49. Ryan Gingras started the flurry at the 1:11 mark. Daniel Kvecher followed up at 5:49, Matt Milanesi on a power play at 8:01 and finally Colin Abbonizio with exactly one minute left in the game.

Braccio, who was stymied by Coddington on at least four occasions after the first period, assisted on the last two goals.

“My approach to the third was ‘No one cares what happened in the past,’” McGinty said. “’No one owes you anything, you earn respect.’

They have to find the culture of their team, they have to develop their unity.

“To struggle in the first two periods the way they did, it can’t happen. The shot totals were there, but they weren’t productive, they weren’t playing hard.”

Notes—Oscar Levin was in goal for South … Wednesday’s game was the only scheduled regular-season meeting between the Bucks and the Titans

C.B. South 9, North Penn 5 12-20-17

WARWICK— It took Central Bucks South some time to get going against North Penn Wednesday night. The Titans made up for lost time however, by scoring five goals in the second period to post a 9-5 win over the nights in a Suburban High School Hockey League matchup at Revolution Ice Gardens.

It was the second victory for South over North Penn in just under a month; the Titans scored a 7-0 shutout on Thanksgiving Eve, but this one counted in the Continental Division standings. South improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the division while the Knights slipped to 4-3 and 3-1.

Matt Stoll paced the Titans with four goals and an assist. “We beat North Penn 7-0 the last game we played them,” he said. “We came into this game ‘Okay, maybe this should be an easy game but you never really should think that.”

The Knights jumped in front just 36 seconds the first period when John Kaufhold scored on a. forehanded from theft circle on the first shot of the game. When Jared Alebano scored on the Knights’ fourth shot at the 7:13 mark, South goaltender Tim White departed in favor of Oscar Levin.

South coach Shaun McGinty was perplexed with his team’s slow start. “We can’t do it,” he said. “We had a slow start tonight and gave them an opportunity to put in two on us. But it’s good for these boys to have the adversity and push through and come together as a team.”

The Titans finally erupted in the second frame when Evan King, Reis Braccio, Colin Abbonizio, and Tyler Boylan scored goals in a span of 7 minutes, 27 seconds to give their side a 4-2 advantage.

We came out and played the way we wanted to in the first period,” said North Penn coach Kevin Vaitis. “But it’s tough to keep that team off the scoreboard.

Brian Leinheiser scored for North Penn to make it a one-goal game again with 3:19 left in the middle period With 1:18 left in the period, the Titans lost Braccio, who drew a five-minute penalty for a check from behind plus a game misconduct for taking the Knights’ George Boyle into the boards directly in front of the North Penn bench. Boyle lay face down on the ice for more than two minutes before being helped to the dressing room.

“There’s no place in the game for a hit like that,” Vaitis said. “I thought it was not needed.”

Vaitis indicated that Boyle was not seriously injured on the play.

South extended its lead when Stoll scored his first goal, a shorthanded effort that came with 36 seconds left in the period.

Jared Albano scored fro North Penn 2:53 into the third period to bring his team within a goal at 5-4 but Alex Glushek answered for the Titans 59 seconds later. North Penn’s last goal came off the stick of Jake Nelson at the 5:08 mark but Stoll scored three consecutive goals to finish the scoring.

The Titans outshot the Knights 35-34. Levin finished with 25 saves in 40:43 of action.
