Pennsbury 7, Souderton 4

HATFIELD— Much of the evening was filled with drama, but in the end, Pennsbury continued to reign supreme in the Suburban High School Hockey League. The Falcons scored four goals in the third period Thursday night to overcome stubborn Souderton 7-4 in a SHSHL National/Continental clash at Hatfield Ice.

Pennsbury won its sixth straight game and improved its record to a division-best 7-0-0-1 overall and 5-0 in divisional play. But the winless Big Red (0-7 overall, 0-5 in the division) gave their foes all they wanted and more.

Souderton scored the game’s first goal and led four times, including 4-3 after two periods, before running out of gas in the final stanza.

For Pennsbury coach Ryan Daley, Thursday’s result brought recollections of the teams’ first meeting, a 6-5 Pennsbury win on January 20 in a non-league encounter.

“Some teams just have your number,” Daley said, “and they have ours. “I don’t think their record really reflects how good a team they are.

“They’re young, their goalie (Noah Connor) had an outstanding night. They’ve got a bright future.”

For much of the evening, Souderton’s future was the present. The teams traded goals through the first two periods. Seth Grossman found the back of the net twice for the Big Red to give him 12 goals for the season in just five games. Liam O’ Neill and Tim Alexander also contributed Souderton goals, while Andrew Falkenstein, Logan Doyle, and Evan Eisler all scored for Pennsbury.
In the third period the Falcons stepped on the gas. Reece Millman tied the game at the 3:01 mark before Connor Coyne put his team in front for good at 5:50. Jake McCaw extended Pennsbury’s lead at 11:55 before Eric Eisler  added an exclamation point with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

The Falcon outshot the Big Red 16-7 in the final period and 30-10 over the last two. Pennsbury finished with a 38-20 edge in shots.

Despite the loss Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat took away an abundance of positives. “That’s a good team there,” he said of the Falcons. “You look at their stats and everything. They’re balanced, they get scoring contributions from a lot of different players.”

The scoresheet confirmed Uchniat’s impressions; Pennsbury’s seven goals were scored by seven different players.

The Big Red went into the game without defensemen Jaden Garick and Ben Fadden and lost another blueliner during the game.

“Pennsbury wore is down,” Uchniat said.

The Falcons meanwhile have much to reflect on after Thursday’s win. “We didn’t get the start we wanted,” Daley said. “We pride ourselves on being a fast team, with a lot of offense, a lot of shots. That first period we had 10 shots and let up the first goal, just the complete opposite of what we were trying to do.”

North Penn 8, Souderton 5

HATFIELD—There were plenty of fireworks at Hatfield Ice Wednesday night. North Penn and Souderton combined for 13 goals with the Knights celebrating their Senior Night with an 8-5 win.

Apart from the result however, there was plenty for both coaches to feel good about.

For North Penn, which improved to 3-3-1-0 overall (2-2 in National/Continental divisional play) it was a night when all the pieces fit.

“We have three lines contributing for us when we have everybody here, and everybody is healthy and able to play” said North Penn coach Kevin Vaitis. “and I think we saw a little bit of that tonight, what we could do with the balanced lines. And if you can do that, it generates a lot of pressure for the other team. It’s tough for them to match up with the lines you have out there, and we were able to have all our lines contribute.”

Ryan Kaufhold paced the Knights with a hat trick, giving him eight goals on the season.

The sophomore thinks he and his teammates have turned a corner. “I think we’re hitting a turning point,” he said. “There are some tough teams we have to go against but I think we can win.”

Zachary Cline scored two goals for North Penn while Jeromy Porubski contributed three assists.

For a young Souderton team, it was another test in a demanding curriculum. The Big Red (0-6, 0-4 in divisional play), dressed 14 players Wednesday night. Eight of the 14 were freshmen.

Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat spoke to his team’s progress. “It’s been a year of growth,” he said. “Our goal is to get better each and every game. the first game we played (North Penn) we lost 10-0 (on January 14. Tonight was a much better battle.”

Seth Grossman, one of the freshman corps, paced the Big Red with four goals. Uchniat praised his work ethic. “He works hard,” he said. “You’ve got some players that wait. for things to happen he makes things happen.

“He shows signs of leadership already, as a freshman and I think when the other players see that, it makes them work that much harder.”

Noah Connor, another freshman, made 41 saves in the Souderton net.

Kaufhold and Zachary Cline scored goals to give North Penn a 2-0 lead after one period. The second stanza was a shootout with each team scoring three times’ Grossman  scored all three of Souderton’s goals.

It was still a two-goal game entering the third period and Grossman’s fourth goal of the night made it a two-goal game for the last time with 5:48 still remaining in regulation. Kaufhold completed his hat trick 33 seconds later to give the Knights some insurance.

Abington 5, Souderton 4 OT

HATFIELD— What played out at Hatfield Ice Thursday night was a splendid advertisement for high-school hockey. Abington and Souderton feature two of the youngest lineups in the Suburban High School Hockey League and both have been going through some early season growing pains.

But they battled hard against each other before Colin Bruton’s goal with 52 seconds remaining in overtime gave Abington a 5-4 win.

The result allowed the Galloping Ghosts to square their league mark at 1-1 (2-3 overall) and they had to climb out of a hole to do it. Tom Rourke drew a tripping penalty with 1:36 left in regulation so Souderton (0-6, 0-4) started the three-on-three overtime session with a 24-second four skaters to three advantage. The Indians had the better of the play for much of the extra period but got caught in a change, allowing Bruton to find open space up the middle of the ice and beat Souderton goaltender Noah Connor.

After giving up 31 goals in their previous four games, three of them losses, Thursday’s effort was a step forward for a young Abington team finding its way.

“We’ve got 15 freshmen and sophomores on the team,” said Abington coach Ken Brzozowski. “We have no seniors. So, as I was just saying to them now in the locker room, this is a character builder for us, and hopefully we can take, and build, a little momentum with it and see what it does for us as the season goes on.”

Outside the other dressing room, Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat was expressing many of the same positive sentiments despite the defeat. “I was very happy with the game out there,” he said. “It was back and forth, it was competitive. I thought both teams skated well, they skated hard. And neither team gave up until the very end.”

The Indians didn’t have a lot of experience with three-on-three overtime, which is being used in club hockey this season as well as the SHSHL. “There was a little bit of a mixup with a change at the end of the game,” Uchniat said, and they capitalized on it. I’ve got to give it up that team, I think they’ve got nine or 10 freshmen on that team and they’ve got a good program moving forward.”

Tyler MacPhee delivered a hat trick for Souderton in the loss. He and Rourke traded early goals before Sean Faye gave the Galloping Ghosts a 2-1 lead with 2:51 left in the first period. Liam O’ Neill tied the game for Souderton with a shorthanded goal 6:22 into the second session before Joe Stelacio and Griffin Carpenter scored goals 56 second apart to give Abington a 4-2 lead with 6:22 left in the period. MacPhee scored his second goal with 2:28 left the second period and completed his hat trick with a shorthanded effort 1:34 into the third.

Abington 9, Souderton 1

WILLOW GROVE— Stepping up can be hard to do. After competing in the Class A American Division of the Suburban High School Hockey League a year ago, Abington, which helped found the SHSHL four-and-a-half decades ago, has stepped up to Class 2A this year.
The Galloping Ghosts went through some growing pains at the start of the season but put all the pieces together Thursday night in the course of a 9-1 win over Souderton at Wintersport Arena.

Thursday marked the official league opener for Abington, which stands at 1-2-1 overall.

Captain Perry Carpenter led the way for the victors, delivering a hat trick plus three assists. Ryan Gosselin added two goals and two assists.

“We worked really well as a team,” Carpenter said, “which we’ve been struggling to do in the past games. But we really picked up our game this game.”

Abington coach Ken Brzozowski was pleased with the way the pieces fit. “When I look at a score sheet, whether it’s Perry or anybody else, I looing to see who got the assists,” he said. “Not necessarily who’s putting the puck in the net and Perry is one of those players who is a leader in putting assists on the scoresheet.

Souderton (0-5, 0-3 in league play) was without several key players who had club responsibilities and had just 12 skaters available.

The Galloping Ghosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Perry had a hand in all four goals, scoring once himself and providing three assists. But Souderton goaltender Amanda Kaminsky kept things from getting out of hand by making 15 saves in the 16-minute period.

“She cuts down the angles,” Carpenter said. “She makes herself big in net and that’s all the world to a goalie.”

Abington extended its lead by scoring four additional goals in the second frame. Carpenter scored twice to complete his hat trick.

Things got chippy over the course of a third period that featured nine penalties. The Big Red’s Luke Bowman scored a power-play goal off a deflection at the 4:25 mark to spoil Jacob Snellenberg’s shutout bid.

Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat noted that his team played Abington on even terms over the second half of the game thanks in large part to Kaminsky’s efforts. “She did a very good job,” he said. “She locked down the back half of the game.

“It was 1-1 the second half of the game (minus eight seconds). There were too many defensive errors in the beginning.”

Athletes Helping Athletes Update

The Athletes Helping Athletes showcase continued Wednesday night at Revolution Ice Gardens. Father Judge bested Central Bucks South 3-2 to complete  opening round play with a perfect 3-0 record. The Crusaders are assured of a spot in next Friday’s championship game.

In the other game on Wednesday’s card, North Penn was a 9-4 winner over Souderton.

AHA Showcase About More Than Hockey

The Athletes Helping Athletes Showcase has become a fixture in local hockey circles. For the eight teams involved, (Central Bucks South, Central Bucks East, Father Judge, North Penn, Souderton, William Tennent, Hatboro-Horsham, Archbishop Wood) it is an opportunity to tune up for the season to come.

But it also an opportunity to promote the Athletes Helping Athletes effort as AHA founder Rick Leonetti explains.

“When the (AHA) kids come in here, I know they’re excited to be here,” Leonetti said Monday night. “I know the teams are excited to have them all which is even more beneficial. The parents get to sit back and watch the kids (participate in a ceremonial puck drop) and be a part of the team.

“Some of the teams let the let kids go into the locker room before the game. It’s an exciting thing because the kids get to do something typical.

“We have some high-school kids coming tonight that will host them and sit with them and talk to them. Whether they’re into the hockey games or not, the girls that are here tonight will sit with them and talk to them about everything under the sun.”

The showcase is now in its fifth season. North Penn coach Kevin Vaitis has brought his team to the showcase since Year Two.

“There are a few of my players that have been here since we started,” he said. “It just something that shows them that there’s more to ice hockey. Having some of these athletes here and cheering us on up against the glass, it’s really a thrill for them and it’s a great experience for us to kind of give back to them.”

The tournament will continue at Revolution Ice Gardens through October 26.
