HATFIELD— Joe Stelacio’s goal with 4:25 remaining in the third period capped a remarkable comeback and gave Abington a 7-6 win over Wissahickon Wednesday night in a Suburban High School Hockey League American Division matchup at Hatfield Ice.

The Galloping Ghosts rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the second period and trailed 6-3 going into the final session before scoring four unanswered goals to record their fifth victory in six starts.

The win moved Abington in to first place in the division ahead of the Trojans (4-1) who have a game in hand as the SHSHL regular season nears its halfway mark.

“This is certainly a big win for us,” said Abington coach Ken Brzozowski. “It’s something we’ve been working for a while, to be able to play at this level, play at this caliber. We thought coming into the game we had a chance, we got down, and the team just rebounded.”

The Galloping Ghosts had to climb a very steep hill. With just under five minutes gone in the middle period Wissahickon had a 5-0 lead on the strength of three goals from Nick Hussa and two more from Brian Garry. Abington didn’t get on the board until Matt Kramer found the back of the net with 6:58 remaining in the second session. Jordan Heydt and Ian Heydt added goals 55 seconds apart to make it a 5-3 game with 2:39 left in the period.

Garry completed a hat trick to give his team a three-goal advantage heading into the third period but the Trojans, who were playing their first game in two weeks because of Covid-19 issues and had only nine skaters dressed on Wednesday, did not score again. Griffin Carpenter, Stelacio, and Kramer all scored in a span of 4:49 draw their side even with 5:55 left and set the stage for Stelacio’s game winner.

Colin Bruton, Abington’s captain, said he and his teammates maintained their focus during their third-period comeback. “I just think we needed to stick to our game,” he said. “we knew we could score on them. We had three goals on them at that point. We just wanted to keep playing our game, just try and outwork them, and I think we did a good job of that.”

Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington was missing several regulars including his top defense pair.

“We could have played much better,” he said. “Maybe that’s fatigue too. But we still had the lead.”

Ice chips—the Trojans had a 39-21 advantage in shots. P-W’s John Cubbin Savoring Being Back on the Ice

HATFIELD—Plymouth Whitemarsh’s game against Upper Dublin Thursday night was something of an afterthought. The Colonials were scheduled to face Wissahickon in a SHSHL American Division matchup but that contest was postponed because of Covid-19 issues within the Wissahickon program.

So, Upper Dublin stepped into the breach and faced off against the Colonials in a non-league tussle that saw Plymouth Whitemarsh prevail 3-2 when Conlan Carpenter scored with 2:02 remaining in regulation time. The win was the Colonials’ fourth straight.

For John Cubbin however no evening on the ice can be considered mundane. Cubbin, a senior defenseman and the Colonials’ captain, is back playing hockey this year after missing his entire junior season while recovering from a concussion he sustained playing baseball the previous summer.

“It feels amazing,” Cubbin said, “I felt very restricted last year, not being able to play the sport I love. I didn’t feel like me, so I felt like I had to play.

“I’m hoping it makes a difference to the team, that’s why I decided to play. It seems like it is, so hopefully we can continue to grow and grind and continue to add on to our wins.

While Cubbin did not see game action last season, he was on the ice for every practice. That impressed his coach, Josh Aiello.

“I’m really proud of what John Cubbin has accomplished,” Aiello said. “He has spent a year not playing in games, but growing his education of the game, understanding the system, and conditioning, and really starting to fine-tune his craft.

“So, I’m really proud of what he’s accomplished. He’s a team-first kind of guy. He’ll help everyone from a freshman to a senior and its one of the reasons he’s the captain of our team.”
Cubbin admits it’s taken him some time to get his skates under him again. “I definitely feel a little bit rusty, a little bit sloppy in parts of my game,” he said. “A lot of this is like riding a bike, so you get it back pretty quick.”

Cubbin says he isn’t overly concerned about contact in the aftermath of his concussion. “I think I’m a big kid, I can fend for myself,” he said. “As a freshman, I was going out and trying to hit the biggest kid out there and now I’m a senior and I am one of the biggest out there, so I do believe that I can protect myself.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh 8, Wissahickon 3

HATFIELD— The celebration resembled ine that traditionally follows the presentation of the Stanley Cup. The Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials completed their climb to the summit Thursday night with an 8-3 win over Wissahickon in the Suburban High School Hockey League Class A championship game.

A large and enthusiastic audience at Hatfield Ice looked on as the top-seedbed Colonials won for the 18th time in 19th starts. Dean Keller and Luke Weikel each scored twice to help their teammates capture the second SHSHL title in school history; the first came in 2009.

“It feels fantastic,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Josh Aiello. “This has been not just a long season coming (but) a lot of years coming.

“These guys have trained day in and day out … I’m just so proud of our players.”
Wissahickon (10-9) built a 3-1 lead by the 2:19 mark of the second period on goals from Ty Schiff, Alex Carrozza, and Nicholas Hussa, but the Trojans never scored again.

Jack Mishkin, Keller, and Ben Lubas scored goals in a span of 2:59 to give the Colonials a 4-3 lead and additional goals from Aidan Keogh sand Jake Weikel made it a 6-3 game before the period ended. Luke Weikel added both his goals in the third period.

The Colonials were just as effective inside their own zone, keeping Bryan Garry, Wissahickon’s top offensive threat, off the scoresheet.

“They did a good job of that,” said Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington. “We made some mistakes like (allowing breakaway opportunities).”

Harrington said penalties took his team out of its rhythm. “When you’re killing or on the power play, it distrusts everything,” he said. “They kind of messes up your flow, We weren’t able to play our third line that much.”

Keller, the Plymouth Whitemarsh captain, reflected on winning a championship.”It means everything,” he said. “The last four years we’ve really been working hard. We’ve been starting in August, just getting ready for games like these and its great that it finally paid off.”

Wissahickon goaltender Chris Shea became was involved in an altercation after they final buzzer and received a major penalty and a game misconduct. That brings with it an automatic one-game suspension.
Ice chips—Both teams will begin Flyers Cup play on Monday night. The Colonials,, who are seeded eighth, will face Lower Dauphin in an 8:45 game at Ice Line. Wissahickon, the 11th seed, will take on Unionville at 6:45 at the same rink.

A Bit of Hockey History

Hockey Happenings has received some new verified historical information. Consequently, this article has been revised.

Central Bucks South, which will face Council Rock South for the SHSHL Class AA title tonight at Hatfield Ice (6:30) is trying to win a league title for the eighth time.

The Titans previously won titles in 2005 ’12, ’13, and four straight form 2015-18. That Germantown Academy also claimed four straight titles from 1998-2001, the last four of the 11 recorded SHSHL championships in their history. That is an all-time record

Council Rock South’s only SHSHL title as a distinctly separate entity came in 2010. Before the Council Rock School District opened its second high school, Council Rock won SHSHL titles in 1984, ’87, ’88, ’89, 90′ ’91 and ’97. The Indians’ five consecutive titles from 1987-91 is a record.

Wissahickon and Plymouth Whitemarsh will meet Thursday night for the SHSHSL Class A title. The Trojans, who are the defending champions, also won SHSHL Class A titles in 2006, 2010, and 20015 and possibly 2003 (the historical record is unclear).

Plymouth Whitemarsh, which was part of the SHSHL in 1973-74, claimed its only title in Class A in 2008-09

Wissahickon 10, Hatboro-Horsham 6

WARWICK—After spotting their opponent a significant head start, Wissahickon took control of its Suburban High School Hockey League Class A semifinal against Hatboro-Horsham Wednesday night.

Trailing 3-0 in the first period, the Trojan scored nine goals in the equivalent of one period of hockey and went on to a 10-6 win at Revolution Ice Gardens. The third-seeded Trojans (10-8 overall) will face top-seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh in Thursday’s final (8:30) at Hatfield Ice.

Prior to the opening faceoff, Wissahickon figured to be playing uphill. Leading scorer Nicholas Hussa and Daniel Glazier were serving suspensions while Ben Junker was sidelined with an injury. With next week’s Flyers Cup opener against Unionville already set, it would have been understandable had the Trojans struggled.

Alex Carrozza, their captain, admitted that focusing was a bit difficult. “A little bit,” he said. “Especially since we played them the last game of the regular season (a 9-1 win for the Hatters last Friday). They kind of put a couple goals in on us. It was tough for us to play. We were able to come back and actually put a good team together.”

The second-seeded Hatters (11-6-0-1) were in command at the start, thanks to a goal from Nick Long and two from Aidan Esack, which gave them a 3-0 lead just 6:07 into the first period.

The flow of the game changed however when Carrozza scored for the Trojans with 54 seconds left in the opening session.

“I thought it was important to score that goal.” said Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington.”

It wasn’t apparent immediately, but Carrozza’s effort was a preview of what was to come. Wissahickon’s Bryan Garry and the Hatters’ Seth Lerner traded girls early in the second period before the Trojans scored seven times in a span if 5 minutes, 49 seconds to take a 9-5 lead with 48 seconds left in the 17-minute period.

Garry scored three times in that span. A.J. Pounds added two goals during the spurt, while Carrozza and Nolan Ryan also scored.

Hatter coach Gianni Lafratta felt his team got away from what it defensively in the opening period. “We had guys in the slot, we kept everything outside,” he said.” Gary, I think, had three shots on net.

“We had that three-goal lead and the little things started to fall apart, the passing, the presence in the defensive zone.”

Garry added a fifth goal in the third period. He also had an assist.

Ice Chips—Plymouth Whitemarsh defeated Truman 12-2 in the evening’s other semifinal. Aidan Keogh scored four goals for the Colonials before the game was called with 10:54 left in the third period. Luke Weikel, Colin Franzoni, and Dean Keller added two goals each.

SHSHL Playoff Ponderings

The Suburban High School Hockey League has officially confirmed its playoff schedule. Four Class AA quarterfinal games will be played on Monday, February 24 with the top four seeds hosting games at their traditional home rinks.

The semifinals will be played on Wednesday, February 26 long with two Class A semifinal games.

The championship games in both classes will be played on Thursday, February 27.

Pennridge (Class AA) and Wissahickon (Class A) are the defending league champions. The SHSHL crowned its first champion, Abington, in 1973-74. Germantown Academy has the all-time record of 11 league titles, all of which occurred before the league began crowning separate Class AA and Class A champions c. 2002-03. Since then, Wisshkckon has won a confirmed five Class A titles.

Note: The SHSHL is still looking to fill in some blanks in its Roll Call of Champions. The league is still working to confirm who won the Class AA title during the 2006-07 season and the Class A title in 2003-04 and possibly 2002-03. Plymouth Whitemarsh 14, Wissahickon 12

HATFIELD—An abundance of fireworks were discharged at Hatfield Ice Thursday night. Wissahickon and Plymouth Whitemarsh celebrated a joint senior night by combining to score 26 goals in the scheduled 48-minute game with the Colonials prevailing 14-12.

The win kept Plymouth Whitemarsh unbeaten in SHSHL American Division play at 11-0 (15-1 overall). It was also the Colonials’ 12th straight win. The Trojans slipped to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the division.

The contest was terminated with 6.9 seconds remaining in the third period after an altercation near the Plymouth Whitemarsh net that resulted in a total of 13 penalties being accessed to six players. Wissahickon’s Daniel Glazier was accessed a double game misconduct while his teammate Nicholas Hussa received a single game misconduct. Three Colonials, Devin Reilly, Thomas Corcoran, and Logan Westerfer received game misconducts.

Prior to the truncated finish, the evening featured an abundance of racehorse hockey. Plymouth Whitemarsh jumped to a 3-0 lead by the 4:35 mark of the first period before Wissahickon scored four straight goals to take the lead with 6:33 left in the period; it would turn out to be the Trojans’ only lead of the night and at period’s end the teams were deadlocked at 5-5.

The Colonials pulled away from their foes by scoring the first five goals of the second period before the Trojans scored the last two before adding two more at the start of the third frame to move within a goal at 10-9 with 12;54 still left in regulation. Jack Mishkin and Colin Franzoni added goals for the Colonials at that point and the lead was never less than two the rest of the way.

“Both teams came out with a lot of energy,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Josh Aiello. Both teams have offensive power and I think people were on the edge of their seats, it being Senior Night and really trying t get going offensively.”

Jake Weikel scored five goals for the Colonials and added an assist. Luke Weikel added three goals. Brian Gary paced Wissahickon with four goals and five assists, A.J. Pounds scored three goals for the Trojans and added four assists.

“It was kind of a run-and-gun game,” said Wissahickon coach Ken Harrington. “Some games, they kick off like that and they remain that way the whole game and defense sort of goes to the side sometimes a little bit.”

The Evening was About Much More than the Result

HATFIELD—The outcome of Wednesday’s Suburban High School Hockey League American Division game between Truman and Wissahickon was never in doubt. The Trojans scored eight goals in the first period and went on to a 14-4 win at Hatfield Ice in a game that was halted with 6:09 left in the third period via the 10-goal mercy rule.

There was a much deeper meaning to the evening however than the final result. What mattered most is that the young men wearing the Truman colors of old gold and back were getting the opportunity to play hockey and to do so representing their school.

The Tigers are winless in 12 starts this season. But their passion for the game of hockey remains, harkening back to a time when today’s players’ parents may not have been born, a time when players seized every opportunity they could to satisfy their craving for the sport.

The Truman roster includes 12 players and a goaltender, six of whom have experience playing travel hockey. Only one of the 13 rostered players is a senior.

On Wednesday night goaltender Connor Pilla was on hand, supported by just eight skaters. But the Tigers battled on, as they have all season.

Truman is coached by Bill Keyser, who takes a back seat to no one when it comes to having a passion for hockey. Now, he concentrates on helping his players nurture their own passion for the sport and is proud of fact that his players have bonded despite being overmatched on most nights.

“They all come together,” he said. “They like each other. They come out and they play for me and I’m not going to be a coach that’s going to be on them. I want to make sure they come and have fun, and I try to make it fun for them every game, Even though we lose, I try to make it their team.”

To that end, Keyser allows his team considerable input into the decision-making process. ‘I think by allowing them to feel like it’s their team they have more responsibility,” he said. “They want to become something.”

Pilla is in a unique situation. A freshman, he played B Division middle school hockey last year. Now he is facing shots from players who may be three or four years older than himself; on Wednesday he faced 45 of them in just under 42 minutes of playing time.

Had Pilla not accepted the challenge of stepping into the varsity nets Truman would not have been eligible to compete in the SHSHL this season. League rules require purity, i.e. that all players attend the school they represent. In fact, Keyser readily admits that without Pilla the Tigers would not be able to field a team at all.

“We’re putting him in an environment that really, he shouldn’t be in,” Keyser said. “But he’s able to take the challenge he steps himself up, an d gave us a chance to put a team in and still be a varsity team. Without him, we wouldn’t have been able to make this possible.”
