Flyers Cup Schedule Finalized

The schedule for the 2020 Flyers Cup tournament has been set. The 41^stedition of the tournament will commence on Monday, March 2 and continue through Friday, March 20.

Up to 53 teams will compete in the event in five separate divisions. The field will be announced on the evening of Sunday, February 23 with the tournament to begin eight days later.

The schedule is as follows

Monday. March 2: Class A first round games

Tuesday, March 3: Class AA first round games

Wednesday, March 4: Quarterfinal games in Class A and the South Jersey/Delaware divisions

Thursday, March 5: Quarterfinal games in Class AA and Class AAA divisions

Monday, March 9: Class A semifinals and Girls Division Play in

Wednesday, March 11: Class AA and Class AAA semifinals

Thursday, March 12: Class AA and Class AAA semifinals

Monday, March 16: Girls and SJ/Del semifinals

Tuesday, March 17: Class A final and possible Class AA final

Wednesday, March 18: Class AAA final and possible Class AA Final

Thursday, March 19: SJ/Del final

The three Pennsylvania boys’ champions will advance to the Pennsylvania state championship games on Saturday, January 21 at Ice Line. The game schedule will be as follows:

11:00: Class A

2:00: Class AA

5:00: Class AAA

According to Flyers Cup Committee President Eric Tye, the game schedule will be arranged to accommodate doubleheaders at tournament venues and to keep teams close to their home areas as possible with higher seeded teams receiving priority. There is longer break between the semifinal and final rounds in years past to account for the possibility of inclement weather.

Holy Ghost Prep 5, Malvern Prep 1

Five different players scored goals as Holy Ghost Prep scored a 5-1 win over Malvern prep on Wednesday in an APAC game at Ice Line. With the win, the Firebirds improved to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-1-0 in the APAC. The Friars slipped to 6-5 and 2-4-2-0 in the APAC.

Luke Panepresso’s goal with 3:24 left in the opening period gave the Firebirds a 1-0 led. Evan Mudrick, Byron Hartley, and Braedon Baesher added goals in the second period before Holy Ghost Prep’s John Connelly and Malvern Prep’s Matt Harris traded goals in the third.

Sean Joyce made 24 saves in goal for the win.

Central Bucks South 6, Council Rock South 3

HATFIELD—The atmosphere inside the building was a reasonable facsimile of that at a late-round Flyers Cup game. And with good reason, for both central Bucks South and Council Rock South have presented their credentials as legitimate contenders for the Class AA Flyers Cup title.

On this night, it was the Titans who prevailed, 6-3. Matt Milanesi and Colin Abbonizio each scored twice as C.B. South (9-0-0-1 overall, 7-0 in league play) remained atop the SHSHL’s Class AA Division.

In the sometimes-rambunctious atmosphere at Revolution Ice Gardens the Titans’ experience proved to be an asset. They had 12 seniors in their lineup to the Golden Hawks’ four.

“I’ve been playing South hockey for four years,” Milanesi said. “I knew what to do. (Coach Sean McGinty) tells us to do the same stuff every game, ‘Come out, move the puck, get shots on net’ and that’s what I keep telling our underclassmen. That’s what we need to do each game.”

The Golden Hawks (5-4, 5-1) had the better of the play in the opening minutes but Mason Moyer in the C.B. South net kept them at bay before Dominic Patrone and David Kiecher scored goals om a span of 1:41 to give the Titans a 2-0 lead 7:54 into the period.

Jeremy Purcell cut the lead in half when he scored for the Golden Hawks at 9:54 but matters ground to a halt after the first period when play was delayed for several minutes while a number of spectators were removed.

The Titans, who started the second stanza with a full two-minute power play, immediately seized the momentum when Milanesi scored after just 55 seconds. Douglas Lopez answered for the Hawks at 1:43 but Milanesi scored his second goal of the game at 7:49 to make it a 4-2 game and the scored stayed that way to period’s end.

The Titans got off to another fast start in the third frame when Abbonizio scored at the 1:02 mark.

By this point, the game had gotten more physical and gradually became a parade to the penalty box; there were 13 penalties called in the final period after three were whistled in the first period and one at the end of the second. The game’s last 14 penalties were evenly divided.

The Golden Hawks suffered the biggest loss when, with 7:12 left in the game, Jimmy Sweeney, their goaltender, received a five-minute major penalty for high sticking plus a game misconduct for taking a poke at the Titans’ Nathan Fiveitz.

Michael Tobey scored a shorthanded goal for the Golden Hawks when put in a rebound of a Derek Steudler slapshot at 11:59 to make it a 5-3 game but Abbonizio finished the evening by scoring into an empty net with 1:10 remaining.

The start-and-stop nature of the third period left Joe Houk, the Golden Hawks’ veteran coach, perplexed.

“You’ve got two good teams,” he said. “Go out there and let them play …. You come down to the last 10 minutes of the game and you’ve got your two top players sitting in the box … “But they’re a good team. They beat us tonight, we weren’t on our A game.”

Malvern Prep’s John Dewey Understands the Importance of Giving Back

The importance of community service is a concept Malvern Preparatory School seeks to instill in all its students. John Dewey has taken that concept to heart.

Dewey is a senior winger at Malvern Prep, but hockey is just one aspect of his life. During his time there, he’s been involved in a number of service projects. He’s helped run a charity youth lacrosse tournament, has participated in a holiday toy drive, and has been involved in the school’s efforts to feed the hungry and support underprivileged children.”

“I’ve known John since he was in middle school,” said Malvern Prep coach Bill Keenan. “He shows up every day. He’s always the first kind of guy to raise his hand and give to back to the program. It’ great to hear how much how much he’s involved in the outside, volunteering aspect, and it’s important to give back.”

In years past, Dewey has taken part in toy drives for children who would visit the school for a holiday party prior to the Christmas holiday break.

“Kids would come in and you’d play with them throughout the day,” he recalls. “Each kid would have one or two gifts and we’d just have a great day.”

Dewey is also active in Malvern Prep’s ongoing efforts to feed the hungry. Students fill ceramic bowls (made by their fellow students) which they fill with donated canned goods and then distribute in the community.

Dewey notes that the issue of hunger is more widespread than many realize. “Kids will throw food away that they get for lunch or they don’t eat,” he said “They don’t understand how much they’re actually getting.”

Dewey says that participating in events like the food drive give him a lot of satisfaction. “It’s pretty satisfying to realize you’re helping that much in general,” he said. “(Hunger) is such a big issue at home, and in the area.”

Dewey said the concept of serving others is something he will take with him when he graduates from Malvern Prep this spring. “It’s about helping other people who really need help, and not being selfish” he said. “Don’t try to keep everything yourself. Try to help other people.”

Keenan says it’s important for his players and their fellow students at Malvern Prep to understand the importance of giving back to their school and community.

“We’re fortunate in that we have a lot, especially these guys, going to a great school like Malvern,” he said. “Living up to the mission and being able to provide hands outside is something I think is an important quality for these boys to have.”

La Salle 6, Holy Ghost Prep 1

HATFIELD— A half season’s worth of effort is seemingly starting to pay dividends for the La Salle Explorers. Keenan Schneider scored twice and three other players added one goal each as the Explorers bested Holy Ghost Prep 6-1 Friday night in an Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference game at Hatfield Ice.

It was the first regulation win in league play for La Salle, which improved to 1-2-1-1 in the APAC and 8-10 overall versus a schedule that would best be described as rugged.

“As fas as league games go, it’s the best three periods we’ve played this year,” said La Salle coach Wally Muehlbronner. “We played consistent from start to finish. So, it’s something to build on for sure.”

The Firebirds (8-4, 2-3-0-1 the APAC) were making their first start since December 20. It was not an auspicious beginning to the new year.

“We just didn’t come to play,” said Holy Ghost Prep coach Gump Whiteside. “We laid an egg. We didn’t play well collectively and the better team beat us tonight.”

The Explorers were outshot 10-5 in the opening period but found themselves up 1-0 at its conclusion, thanks to a goal from Nathan Benner at the 3:11 mark. Aidan McCabe provided support in goal, making 10 saves in the first frame, a number of them while his mates were dealing with two Firebird power plays.

The Explorers extended their lead in the second session. Jake Armstrong scored on a shot from the left circle exactly three minutes into the period and David Bruner made it a 3-0 game at 11:10 from a deep angle on the right wing that got inside the right post past Firebird netminder Bobby Baehser.

Holy Ghost Prep (8-4, overall, 2-3-1-0 in the APAC) got a goal from Brady Baehser with 2:33 left in the period but the Explorers pulled away in the third frame on a goal from David Kimmel and two more from Schneider.

“We’re coming together as a team,” Schneider said. “Right now, we’re playing as a team and we’re just rolling, honestly.”

Muehlbronner has focused on keeping his lines together to build cohesiveness. Schneider, a sophomore was teamed with Kimmel and Jake Hammond.

“We’ve kind of fought through a lot of the adversity by trying to get the lines staying together,” he said, “not making wholesale changes. We’ve done it, burn I think there’s definitely some chemistry starting to grow between the guys.”

Chris Blango scored in the third round of a shootout to Malvern Prep a 5-4 win over St. Joseph’s Prep Friday night in an APAC matchup at the Class of 1923 Arena at the University of Pennsylvania.

Blango scored two goals in regulation for the Friars (6-4 overall, 2-3-2-0 in the APAC), who moved within two points of St. Joseph’s Prep (6-8, 3-0-0-3 in conference) in the league standings.

Michael Urbani scored twice for the Hawks, who scored twice in the third period to force overtime.

Malvern Prep 5, La Salle 4 OT

HATFIELD— The finish would have made a wonderful ending to a movie. Pierre Larocque scored a goal 1:54 into overtime to give Malvern Prep a 5-4 win over La Salle Wednesday’s evening in an APAC matchup at Hatfield Ice.

Moments earlier, Larocque assisted on Ryan Sambuco’s goal that tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation.

“We were really aggravated with the way we were playing at the time,” Larocque said. “So we had to stay positive in order to play better.”

Malvern Prep (5-4 overall, 3-2-1-0 in the APAC) was playing its first game since December 11 but they got off to a fast start against the Explorers (7-9, 0-2-1-1) who played a game this past Monday. Harrison Campbell and Jack Constabile scored goals 67 seconds apart to put the Friars up 2-0 with 3:18 left in the first period.

But goals from David Kimmel and Collin Keiser drew the Explorers even at 3:35 of the second frame. Jimmy Kirk put the Friars in front once more at the 5:05 mark but Jake Harmon and David Bruner scored 48 seconds apart to put La Salle back in front with 1:17 left in the period,

The third period was scoreless until Sambuco and Larocque provided their heroics. The Friars prevailed despite being outshot 26-16.

“It was nice to see them battle back there at the end,” said Malvern Prep coach Bill Keenan, and pop one in late and keep possession and get a heck of a shoot by Pierre Larocque.

Larocque was idled much of last season by an ankle injury. this year he’s spent time both up front and on the blue line.

“He battles every time he’s out there,” Keenan said. “For him to get going there and get that goal, it means a lot to us, it means a lot to our team.”
Larocque is enjoying simply being back on the ice. “I missed it a lot,” he said,” he said. “I watched (hockey) a lot, it was really tough.”

Keenan is hoping that Wednesday’s win will energize the Friars for the second half of the season. “We had a couple good practices right before this,” he said, carried it into today, and we’re forward to what’s ahead.”
