Class AAA (Maximum # of teams in field: 8)

  1. St. Joseph’s Prep (6-0-0-3)
  2. La Salle (5-2-0-1)
  3. Holy Ghost Prep (6-3-0-0)
  4. Malvern Prep (6-3-0-0)
  5. Father Judge (10-5-0-0)

In a fairly quiet week across the AAA division, St. Joseph’s Prep (APAC) remains as the #1 team – still with an undefeated regulation record. Holy Ghost Prep (APAC) defeated Malvern Prep (APAC) (5-1) in this week’s only APAC game, sliding Malvern down in the rankings and pulling up HGP. La Salle (APAC) did not play and holds steady at second. Father Judge (ICSHL) remains at five after defeating DMA (ICSHL) in a non-division game.

Class AA (Maximum # of teams in field: 16)

  1. Central Bucks South (9-0-0-1)
  2. Haverford (13-1-0-0)
  3. Perkiomen Valley (9-2-0-1)
  4. North Penn (6-2-0-0)
  5. Downingtown West (7-5-0-1)
  6. Pennsbury (8-2-1-0)
  7. Neshaminy (8-3—0-1)
  8. Council Rock South (5-3-0-0)
  9. Boyertown (8-5-1-0)
  10. Central Bucks East (7-2-1-1)

Central Bucks South (SHSHL) took care of business against SHSHL rival Council Rock South to remain in the top sport and Haverford (ICSHL) remains as number two after having the week off. Perkiomen Valley (ICSHL) added two nice ICSHL wins (Downingtown West and Springford) to leapfrog North Penn (SHSHL) who did not play this week. Downingtown West (ICSHL) remains in fifth and both Pennsbury (SHSHL) and Neshaminy (SHSHL) jump CR South (SHSHL) after their respective wins and CRS’s loss. Boyertown’s (ICSHL) impressive 6-0 victory over Delaware power Salesianum brings Boyertown up one spot and number nine as Central Bucks East (SHSHL) rounds out the Top 10.

Class A (Maximum # of teams in field: 16)

  1. West Chester East (10-3-0-0)
  2. Springfield Delco (9-2-0-2)
  3. Unionville (8-5-0-0)
  4. Plymouth Whitemarsh (9-1-0-0)
  5. West Chester Rustin (7-4-0-2)
  6. Palmyra (13-1-0-1)
  7. Strath Haven (8-3-0-1)
  8. Hershey (10-2-1-2)
  9. Lower Dauphin (10-4-0-0)
  10. West Chester Henderson (5-6-1-0)

West Chester East (ICSHL), Springfield (ICSHL), Unionville (ICSHL) had impressive wins and are the new top three in the A level classification. Plymouth Whitemarsh (SHSHL) earned another league W as they round out the top four. West Chester Bayard Rustin’s (ICSHL) win over cross-town rival West Chester Henderson (ICSHL) causes a flip-flop between Rustin and Palmyra (CPIHL). Palmyra, although earning a win, drop one spot to number six for this week. Strath Haven (ICSHL) has hung around the same general spot in our rankings all year and continue to be there at number seven. Hershey (CPIHL) moves up to number eight and fellow league member Lower Dauphin (CPIHL) enter the polls for the first time at number nine. WC Henderson drops to number ten after of dropping two games to equally dominant opponents (WC East and WC Bayard Rustin).

N.J./Del (Maximum # of teams in field: 8)

  1. Eastern (11-2-2-0)
  2. Salesianum (7-4-1-1)
  3. Moorsetown (8-4-3-0)
  4. Cherokee (7-4-4-0)
  5. Appoquinimink (11-1-0-2)

Eastern (SJHSHL) remains as the top seed after adding one victory to their belt. Salesianum (ICSHL) still sits in second, but their non-division loss to Boyertown (6-0) has everything tightening up for later rankings, especially with Moorestown (SJHSHL) having a solid 1-0-1 week. Cherokee (SJHSHL) jumps to fourth after battling to a tie with Moorestown and then beating Shawnee (SJHSHL) in an emotional dual-senior night battle. Appoquinimink (ICSHL) rounds out the top five.

Girls (Maximum # of teams in field: 5)

  1. Bux-Mont Catholic (10-1-0-0)
  2. Unionville (8-2-0-2)
  3. Avon Grove (8-3-0-1)
  4. West Chester East (3-7-0-0)

Bux-Mont (ICSHL) sits at the top of the Girls division power Rranking for a second week in a row. It was a very quiet week of games, but previous #4 WC Henderson (ICSHL) suffered a large loss, moving WC East (ICSHL) back in to the polls as the new #4. Unionville (ICSHL) and Avon Grove (ICSHL) remain at #2 and #3.

Central Bucks South 6, Council Rock South 3

HATFIELD—The atmosphere inside the building was a reasonable facsimile of that at a late-round Flyers Cup game. And with good reason, for both central Bucks South and Council Rock South have presented their credentials as legitimate contenders for the Class AA Flyers Cup title.

On this night, it was the Titans who prevailed, 6-3. Matt Milanesi and Colin Abbonizio each scored twice as C.B. South (9-0-0-1 overall, 7-0 in league play) remained atop the SHSHL’s Class AA Division.

In the sometimes-rambunctious atmosphere at Revolution Ice Gardens the Titans’ experience proved to be an asset. They had 12 seniors in their lineup to the Golden Hawks’ four.

“I’ve been playing South hockey for four years,” Milanesi said. “I knew what to do. (Coach Sean McGinty) tells us to do the same stuff every game, ‘Come out, move the puck, get shots on net’ and that’s what I keep telling our underclassmen. That’s what we need to do each game.”

The Golden Hawks (5-4, 5-1) had the better of the play in the opening minutes but Mason Moyer in the C.B. South net kept them at bay before Dominic Patrone and David Kiecher scored goals om a span of 1:41 to give the Titans a 2-0 lead 7:54 into the period.

Jeremy Purcell cut the lead in half when he scored for the Golden Hawks at 9:54 but matters ground to a halt after the first period when play was delayed for several minutes while a number of spectators were removed.

The Titans, who started the second stanza with a full two-minute power play, immediately seized the momentum when Milanesi scored after just 55 seconds. Douglas Lopez answered for the Hawks at 1:43 but Milanesi scored his second goal of the game at 7:49 to make it a 4-2 game and the scored stayed that way to period’s end.

The Titans got off to another fast start in the third frame when Abbonizio scored at the 1:02 mark.

By this point, the game had gotten more physical and gradually became a parade to the penalty box; there were 13 penalties called in the final period after three were whistled in the first period and one at the end of the second. The game’s last 14 penalties were evenly divided.

The Golden Hawks suffered the biggest loss when, with 7:12 left in the game, Jimmy Sweeney, their goaltender, received a five-minute major penalty for high sticking plus a game misconduct for taking a poke at the Titans’ Nathan Fiveitz.

Michael Tobey scored a shorthanded goal for the Golden Hawks when put in a rebound of a Derek Steudler slapshot at 11:59 to make it a 5-3 game but Abbonizio finished the evening by scoring into an empty net with 1:10 remaining.

The start-and-stop nature of the third period left Joe Houk, the Golden Hawks’ veteran coach, perplexed.

“You’ve got two good teams,” he said. “Go out there and let them play …. You come down to the last 10 minutes of the game and you’ve got your two top players sitting in the box … “But they’re a good team. They beat us tonight, we weren’t on our A game.”

LaSalle 2, Central Bucks South 1 OT

By Rick Woelfel

HATFIELD— The start of a new hockey season always brings changes with it. Rosters change and even returning players assume new roles. But attention to detail matters.
A number of players who played key roles for the LaSalle team that won the Class AAA Flyers Cup and state titles last year are gone. But the program’s commitment to excellence remains as was demonstrated Monday night

Ryan Ferry scored 28 seconds into three-on-three overtime (a new feature of USA Hockey varsity competition this season) to give the Explorers a 2-1 non-league win over Central Bucks South at Hatfield Ice. Ferry collected a feed from Nate Benner out of the deep left-wing corner and beat Titan keeper Mason Moyer inside the left-wing corner. The puck hit the back of the net as Ferry was being checked to the ice.

It was the second non-league win of the season for the Explorers, who begin Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference play next week. But Ferry says he and his teammates still have some work to do. “I doin’t think we played up to our potential today,” he said. “But it was good just to get a win.”

Ferry, a senior, noted that this year’s LaSalle team is still taking shape. “We lost a lot of kids last year,” he said. “We have a long way to go. We’re not where we need to be right now. But I think if we all put in the hard work, we’re going to get there.”

LaSalle had the better of the opening period but South goaltender Mason Moyer kept the game scoreless most of the way by making 13 saves. His task was complicated by his teammates having to kill three minor penalties in front of him.

“Mason obviously played outstanding,” said South coach Shaun McGinty. “He does that game in and game out, he’s the vital piece in our puzzle. Every team needs a good goaltender; he played stellar tonight.”

Moyer finally yielded when junior Nate Benner scored off a turnover with 13 seconds left in the period while the Explorers themselves were shorthanded.

The Titans drew even with 12:18 gone in the second frame when Colin Abbonizio, their captain, beat William Gross off an offensive right circle faceoff.

LaSalle enjoyed a 29-18 advantage in shots. Aidan McCabe William Gross split the evening in the Explorer net with Gross taking over midway through the second session.

LaSalle coach Wally Muehlbronner said his team has to do the little things well to be successful. “We don’t have the ability to put a lot of pucks in the net right now,” he said. “We’ve got to play a simple game and be strong defensively. And the compete levels has got to get higher.”
C.B. South 0 1 0 0—1

First-period goals: Nate Benner (L) unassisted, 15:47 (sh)

Pennridge Wins SHSHL Class AA title

By Rick Woelfel

HATFIELD TOWNSHIP—The combination of solid defense and quality goaltending will win a lot of hockey games, especially in the postseason. The Pennridge Rams utilized that formula to become champions Thursday night.

Luke Stranick stopped 35 shots and Matt Guinette and Michael Eissler provided the necessary scoring as the Rams downed Central Bucks South 2-0 in the Suburban High School Hockey League Class AA championship game at Hatfield Ice

It’s the second SHSHL title in history for the second-seeded Rams, who improved their record to 14-2-3. The top-seeded Titans (13-4-2) were attempting to capture an unprecedented fifth straight SHSHL crown and their ninth in history.
After shutting down one of the most potent offenses in the area, the Rams were savoring their success.

“I’ve only gone here for two years, and it feels great to me” said junior defenseman Frankie Rota, who transferred from Quakertown prior to last season. “I can imagine the guys that have been going here for four, I imagine it feels incredible.”

The Rams outshot the Titans by just 40-35 but the efforts of the blueline corps limited South’s quality chances and made life easier for their goaltender.

“My defense played perfect,” Stranick said. “They did everything I could have asked for. They kept the shots to the outside, they kept the screens out of my way, they made it real easy.”

The Titans had the better of things early on until the pace picked up midway through the opening period. Guinette got the Rams on the board at the 8:18 mark of the first frame with a shot from midway between the tops of the two faceoff circles that beat South netminder Oscar Levin, who had a solid game between the pipes despite the defeat.

Pennridge’s second goal, which came 3:30 into the middle period, was the result of a picturesque individual effort by Eissler, who went up the middle and over the blue line before deking around a South defender and beating Moyer. That was all the scoring there was but that was all that was needed.

“Defensively, we gave up some chances,” said Pennridge coach Jeff Montagna, “but we did a real good job not giving up second-chance opportunities. Our defensemen blocked a ton of shots in this game and we swept everything up.

“(South) is a hard team to hold off for 51 minutes and we did.”

Notes:  The Rams won their first league crown in 2008 …Both teams will see action in the Flyers Cup tournament next Wednesday. The second-seeded Titans will face 15th-seed Downingtown West on Wednesday at Revolution Ice Gardens at 7:15. The fourth-seeded Rams will take on 13th seed Garnet Valley the same evening at Hatfield Ice at 8:40 … Shaun McGinty was not behind the Titans’ bench Thursday night because of work commitments. Assistant Tyler Skronski stepped in for him.
