Flyers Cup Committee Names Eligible Teams

The countdown to the 42nd annual Flyers Cup tournament has officially begun with the revelation of the teams that are eligible to be selected for the tournament field.

The Flyers Cup Committee revealed a list of 64 tournament-eligible teams on Thursday morning.

The 64 teams represent the InterCounty Scholastic Hockey League, the Suburban High School Hockey League, the Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference, the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey league, and the state of Delaware.

Firebirds Get Big Win

Holy Ghost Prep picked up its biggest win of the season last Friday with a 2-1 win over LaSalle in. Suburban High School Hockey League Class 3A encounter at Hatfield Ice. Luke Aquaro and Shane Stevens scored the goals for the defending Flyers Cup Class 3A champions.

I was just really happy with our team,” said Holy Ghost Prep coach Gump Whiteside. “I told them after the game, ‘That’s a total team effort. You’re playing a great team down the hallway there.’

“We needed everybody to step up and we did. We just worked for three periods and I can’t be more prouder for our guys.”

Last Friday’s game was a wonderful advertisement for high-school hockey. The goaltenders were superb. Tristan Devine made 28 saves for the Firebirds his LaSalle counterpart, Will Affel, made 24.

The two teams will have a rematch on February 7 at Grundy Arena.
